Two for the price of one - Honduras update

Recommended Posts

We got up around 7:00 and made it to the bus stop by 8:00.  We had breakfast in the room, except I grabbed Katie a breakfast sandwich from the OKW counter service spot.  While I was getting her breakfast, I also had to get a shirt for me from the store, as apparently I didn’t think at all about what I was doing when packing and somehow had absolutely nothing to wear, so I got my first souvenir in the form of an OKW shirt for me.

We made it to AK well before rope drop, where we were absolutely freezing.  We all dressed for the 80+ degrees we would get later in the day without considering how it would feel before the sun really started warming things up. Claire, the coldest one, was so sweet and agreed to do the safari first, even though that was probably the coldest choice we could have made.  The animals that we saw were good and active though we didn’t see any elephants or several other types that we usually see at all.  Still was fun, and we saw these rhinos:

We got a great view of this guy:

After Safari, we grabbed FPs for EE, and then did Primeveral Whirl.  This was perhaps a mistake as Claire then got gun-shy afterward about riding EE.  She decided that Triceratops Spin was a nice, safe ride.  While she was worried about EE, she certainly had no problem with Dinosaur, which we rode twice in a row – she loved it.

Then we headed back to EE, which Kate, Jodi and I loved.  Claire sat it out but was a great sport waiting while we rode this (and a few others over the course of the trip that she opted out of).  Jodi got to ride a second time with Claire’s FP, which of course was fine with Jodi.

We grabbed some lunch at Pizzafari on our way to the FOTLK, which everyone loved.  Jodi isn’t as crazy about musical theater as the rest of our family so I was worried she wouldn’t love it, but she did.  Claire was beside herself and Kate and I of course loved it too.  It was lots of fun. Afterward, amazingly, we headed back to Dinosaur for a third ride.

Another Great Update!

More rhino faces!  It is a staple of your TRs.  Love it.

Great pic of the lion.

Thanks, Aaron!  The rhinos don't appear nearly as much as they used to, but I love it when they do.  :)

Thanks for replying!  I'm hoping people are still out there!

After battling those dinosaurs more than I would have thought possible, we headed out to HS.  Since we were late getting there, we had to hustle to get even the instant FPs for TSMM as they were almost done distributing FP for it for the day.  But, we all got to ride it and of course everyone loved it.

On our way to Star Tours, I was able to get an ADR for the Sci Fi Diner for dinner at the slightly early hour of 4:20.  My friends at home, including Donna whom y’all will meet later in this TR, accuse me of loving to find early bird specials for dinner, and they’re probably right.  For the most part, I would far rather eat early than late.

After Star Tours, Kate and Jodi rode RNRC on the single rider line while Claire and I played around a little bit.

Then, we got Claire on TOT, but she decided she wasn’t much of a fan.  I was a little surprised, as that is probably my third favorite ride, behind Soarin’ and EE, but everyone gets to choose their own likes and dislikes.

Had a hard time getting on line today.

What a super great trip you guys are having.  I love all the photos of the happy faces.

You got a lot done and a lot of great pics of the mother/daughter combos.  Great job.

Looking forward to your trip off campus!

Awesome shots!!!

Yay! I am back with you! Your friends are lucky to be traveling with such experienced Disney folks! I'm definitely happy to see some Rhino Faces! I always enjoy your reports, your family just exudes happiness!

Looks like you're having so much fun!

I'm late but in !    Your first part is the type of trip I am looking forward to someday.   Part 2 looks like fun also.

Thanks, all!  We really were having so much fun.  It was a totally different trip than Part 1, but it was great fun too.  An adventurous field trip (for me!) coming up next.

Monday

Again, I got up early, as I had decided to go get a hot breakfast for girls before our big trip out of the gates to Universal’s Islands of Adventure.  In all of our trips, we have never left the Disney gates to go to Universal (or anywhere else for that matter) and I now had mixed emotions.   In the past, I have tried to talk Ray into going to Universal but I wanted to do it in conjunction with staying on Universal property to get the Express Pass they have, but I could never get Ray on board.  Ray likes the Disney magic and wasn’t willing to roll the dice to see whether he would also enjoy Universal, when he knows that he loves his days at Disney.

But, I’m more adventurous (at least in this arena) than Ray, so a plan was hatched to head off to Islands of Adventure, with the main goal being Harry Potter attractions, shops, etc.   Claire is a HUGE HP fan, and Jodi was also a HP lover, though not as much as Claire.

Claire trying to get Jodi as pumped as Claire is:

P1070581_zps674cd74d.jpg

Back to breakfast time.  I had a series of reasonably-sized SNAFUs while trying to get the girls some hot breakfast this morning.  I had planned to get them pancakes from Olivia’s, only to find that they didn’t open till 7:30, our planned  departure time.  The CS  place didn’t open till then also, so I unexpectedly found myself in a predicament.  I decided to go to Pop Century to the food court to get something (wound up being POP waffles) to bring back to them.  The scary thing is that I made a wrong turn on my way there, and in a panic about getting back in time for the girls to eat and get on the road at our planned time, I made a U-turn at a no-U-turn intersection, which happened to be on a red light at the time.  :dropjaw: I promise, I never do stuff like that at home.  Ever.   Really.  I’m as law abiding as possible.  Heck, I'm a lawyer.  But something about driving around in the dark, trying to find waffles for our girls before going on an adventure I had no prior experience with wound up leading me to run that darn light and do a u-turn against my better judgment.  There were no cars around anywhere so I thought I would be okay, but later when the sun came up, I was reminded of all those cameras they have on the lights.  Ugh.  Please, oh please, don’t let me get a ticket.

Anyway, I made it back and Kate had the girls up and dressed.  They ate their waffles happily (whether it was worth it depends on whether I get a $10,000 ticket), and then we headed off to IOA.  It was an easy drive and easy to figure out the parking.   Several of the things I had worried about in leaving Disney were thankfully of no consequence.

The girls running against the motion on the moving sidewalk thing (no one was on it so we let them):

P1070582_zps35292192.jpg

P1070583_zps7ceebfe6.jpg

We wound up getting there right around 8:10.  Because we were so early, we were able to start a line at one of the entrance things, and everyone just lined up behind us.

P1070584_zpsf6f4c851.jpg

After getting some insider tips from the ticket taker before they opened the gates, we headed in around 8:50 and went, of course, straight to Harry Potter area and the Forbidden Journey.  Even though we were at the front of the line and went straight there, it was still about a 30-45 minute wait, as the Universal hotel guests had been in the park for an hour before we got in. Regardless, when we made it onto the ride, we were blown away – really awesome.  Kate and I both agreed that that one ride was worth the trip and the cost of the tickets.

The whole area was so neat:

P1070586_zps6b40a688.jpg

P1070587_zps7bf597c8.jpg

The detail was fabulous.  They had screaming plants and all sorts of other stuff.

P1070594_zps4015e2d5.jpg

Next, we split with Claire and Kate as they wanted to hang in HP world and Jodi wanted to get her fill of thrill rides.

After figuring out that the Dragon Challenge ride didn’t open till noon, we headed toward the Hulk.  Jodi managed to hook up with Alex, a friend from school, which of course made her day even more fun.  The three of us rode Hulk on the single rider line twice, which I decided was one too many times for me.  Just like with RNRC, I apparently get a headache from being thrown around and upside down repeatedly if I do it more than just once.  Next, we rode Doctor Doom’s Fearfall, which is really a good bit like TOT, except you’re outside rather than inside.  Historically, I haven’t been successful in getting on this type ride other than TOT, but I made it on and had a good time.

P1070590_zpsf976ab5c.jpg

By then, it was time to reunite Alex with his dad and hook back up with Kate and Claire for lunch.  First, though, we stopped off at a bar that serves both beer and butterbeer, which was a big hit with Claire (and Jodi played along).

P1070592_zpsd6018bd4.jpg

P1070593_zps22ee34b9.jpg

We decided to go to lunch at Mythos as Kate had read good things about it.  While we were waiting on our table, Jodi did a fortune telling thing, which she declared totally fake.  Based on what I heard, I would agree with that assessment.  It merely seemed like an excellent way to separate park goers from $20.

Lunch time:

P1070595_zps60762c1f.jpg

P1070596_zpsc529e1d5.jpg

Lunch at Mythos was very good, and then we split up again.  Jodi and I tried unsuccessfully for a third and final time to ride the Dragon Challenge.  We just weren’t willing to stand in the line for 45 minutes.  So, Jodi rode Hulk again two more times, which makes a total of 4 for her (and 2 for me) if you’re counting.

P1070598_zps670497eb.jpg

(Anyone notice anything a little oddly inappropriate about this pic?  I promise – it was definitely not on purpose!)

We hooked back up with Kate and Claire and did Spiderman.  This was another really impressive ride and definitely worth doing if you ever find yourself in Islands of Adventure.  After an encounter with a street character that would not have fit in in any of the WDW parks, we headed home.

Overall, I’m very glad I went to Universal, but mainly because I now don’t have to wonder if I’m doing the right thing by never again leaving the Disney gates.  This was a perfect opportunity to go – Ray wasn’t on this trip, we had a huge Harry Potter fan in the group, and everyone was up for the adventure.  We did fine – the lines were long but we just skipped the ones with lines longer than we wanted to tolerate and we had a great time.  Having said that, I was so glad to get back on Disney property.  Universal just has a feel to it that doesn’t engage me.  I didn’t hate it, but action characters and very scary villains roaming the street is not my thing nearly as much as the goodness of what WDW has.  I really can’t put into words what I’m trying to say, but I’m awfully glad that I’m a Disney girl rather than a Universal fan.  I’m sure you can be both, but for me I think I’ll just happily stay inside the gates on future trips.  The good news is that Danielle now drives so on our next trip, if she wants to try it, she and Jodi and which ever kids we have tagging along can go and live it up and I can stay behind and enjoy being at Disney.

When we got back, Kate and I went for a run while the girls chilled in the room for a bit.  Then, they headed off to ride the monorail for a while and then made it on their own to WCC for supper.

Next, I finally got to go where I had been looking forward to going this whole trip – to the Fort!  My good friend Donna and her family were staying in a cabin and just drove down that day.  It was so much fun.   I got to drive them around in their golf cart to take them on a tour of all of FW.  It really made me miss staying at the Fort.  It was so peaceful and people everywhere were having a great time grilling, chilling, swimming, looping, etc.   The Stewart family (Donna and John, and their 16 year old daughter, 10 year old son and 5 year old daughter, plus an extra 16 year old girl) seemed like they were really going to be at home there.

On the gc tour:

Finally, it was time for them to head to the WL for their dinner reservation and for me to head back to OKW.

Away they go:

Once back, Kate and I did dinner at Olivia’s, then headed back to the room to rest and wait on the girls, who had gone to the MK.

Happily, they made curfew again, which again wasn’t very late as we had an early date with Mickey tomorrow at CM!

Looks like another action packed day. I know what you mean about Universal, it's OK every once in awhile, and we had some old non expiring tickets from years past, but with their new expiring ticket structure, the value to go over there for a day has gone way down.

You're right, Carol - it was pretty expensive for just a day,and it's definitely not my style for most vacation days.  I'm glad we went, but I'm guessing it will be a while before I make it back to US.  Thanks for hanging in there with this long TR!

Looks like you had a great time.

Thanks, Annie.  We definitely did have a great time.

I'm going to try to move this report along, as it's getting long for me and I do want to include a good installment or two on the mission trip Ray and Danielle went to in Honduras.

Tuesday

My first thoughts this morning were, “Oh no – today is the next to the last full WDW day we have” – you know you’re warped when you start worrying about the end of a 5 night trip on the next to the last full day.

We had 7:25 reservations for CM, which Claire and Jodi were particularly excited about. I called the front desk while we were getting ready and they assured me that taxis were “readily available” for an early morning reservation.  We found out though, the almost-hard-way, that that wasn’t exactly right.  We showed up at bell services and they called for a taxi and very matter of factly informed us that it would be about 15 minutes.  :banghead:  It was now 7:10 and obviously we didn’t have 15 minutes to wait on our ride.  However, while I was changing money out at the front desk,  a wonderful CM who happened to have a van parked near bell services offered to drive us there in his van.  Thankfully, we made it and arrived exactly on time.   I wanted to give him this: :bighug: , but instead I gave him a good tip which he gratefully accepted, so everyone was a winner.

CM was great, exactly as it always is.  I love their bacon breakfast pizza, among other stuff of course, and couldn’t resist a Mickey waffle.  The girls and Kate also seemed to really enjoy their meal.

Not sure how but I missed pics with Mickey and Pluto – I think it may have had something to do with an ill-timed crave for waffles on my part.

I liked this picture of Claire waiting on the monorail – it was her first trip to WDW since she was very young and she was just so cute and excited about everything.

P1070636_zps43ebe599.jpg

We made it out of CM in time to take the resort monorail to the MK and still catch the opening ceremonies.

P1070654_zpsa67c6986.jpg

No one other than me was interested in going to Enchanted Tales with Belle, but I exercised my Tour Guide Privilege and made everyone go.   I know Jodi hated it (not being a princess girl), Kate loved it and Claire was some where in between, but I was glad to get a chance to see it again – I loved it again even though Ray wasn’t here to be a guard this time.

We loved this guy’s hair/hat:

We finished at Belle’s around 9:30 and headed toward Splash and BTMRR, by way of grabbing FPs at PP and hitting HM.

When we got to Frontierland, we found out that Splash was down for the day and BTMRR was down for the moment.

(This was clearly not opening up anytime soon…)

We found these guys in the closed splash mountain area:

So, to kill time till we could get FPs for BTMRR, we went to ride POC, only to discover that it was down too.  Really?  That makes at least 3 major attractions that were down so far and it wasn’t even 10:00.    So, we made it back to BTMRR and grabbed FPs and headed toward Space, which was amazingly down too.   Here are some more random pics, in no particular order:

We made our way back to BTMRR, which Claire loved.  So we pulled FPs again, then found some lunch at Pecos Bills.  (Have you ever seen how they present the taco salad to you?  I thought at first that it was a joke, but it was actually really good once I put the toppings on from the make-your-own-salad-or-meal-out-of-condiments-area.  But it sure did look naked at first.)

Heaven forbid, at some time the girls actually talked Kate and I onto Stitch.  Ugh.

Finally, we all decided it was time to split, teens in one direction and Kate and I in the other.  The girls got ice cream and did a monorail loop, while Kate and I went to the Poly bar for fun drinks.  Had something I had been thinking of for years – the Pina Colava.  Mmmmmmm.  Kate had a  mojito.  It was an excellent break.

P1070704_zps9573fac7.jpg

We met the girls back at the TTC and monorailed back to Epcot for dinner at Garden Grove.  Having been slightly sidelined by our detour to the bar at the Poly and barely made it on time but they accepted us and we had a really good time.

Y’all help me with Chip and Dale – I don’t know which one is which.  Regardless, the first one was fine – just a usual character encounter.  The second one, though, was a huge flirt with the girls and they flirted right along with him.  Fun.

After dinner, Jodi rode M:S again (no way I could after a Pina Colava and a glass of wine at dinner)  and then the girls and moms split again.   They hung out in Epcot while we went back to OKW.  Only thing was that once we got back to OKW, I saw the boat to DTD waiting there about to leave and I had unfinished shopping to do so I grabbed it.   I had a fun time shopping and then made it back around the time the girls returned from their solo adventure.

Tomorrow – who knows?   We’ve hit every park pretty hard, but it’s our last day.  We decided to sleep in a little and then hit parks hard with the five remaining DVC FP cards burning a hold in our pockets, before having to leave on Thursday.

Wow, I had a lot of catching up to do.   But I am caught up.  And the problem with getting behind is that you have comments to make while reading but by the time you finish you have forgotten them.  I do remember a couple though...starting with the most recent update...

Dale is the one with the red nose.  Chip has the dark nose, which I can remember because it looks like a chocolate chip.

Nice job splitting up from the girls and getting in some adult time.  Everyone has a good time that way.  That never works out for us, even when we've suggested our older girls go off without us.

Leaving the Disney gates....brave.  The only times we've done it is the visit Ikea or to go see my parents.

Breaking traffic laws at Disney....no problem.  What's the worst that could happen?  They throw you in Disney jail?  Spending time in Disney jail is still better than real life.

Ok, that's all I can remember.

Looks like a ton of fun. When you said fastpasses for PP it took me a while to figure it out. I was like, is there a problem with the bathrooms at MK? Then I remembered good ol Peter Pan. That really stinks the rides were down, especially those since they're major draws.

The Pina Colada looked great especially after a day at a park. How did you like Garden Grill? We ate there a couple years ago and I wasn't impressed. So so food and the waiter wasn't too interested in checking on us.

The girls got ice cream and did a monorail loop, while Kate and I went to the Poly bar for fun drinks.  Had something I had been thinking of for years – the Pina Colava.  Mmmmmmm.  Kate had a  mojito.  It was an excellent break.

I remembered another comment I wanted to make.

This one is critical.

That looks like Sangria.

I'm with Dave.  With all the glitches this site has had over the past two weeks, it's been hard to keep up with trip reports, so I am behind in my reading too, and that's a shame, because this report is awesome!

Your Photopass photos are very good.  It seems that the quality of these has really improved.  I've never paid for Photopass, but it seems like something that would be worth considering.  What type of package do you purchase?

I am envious of these instant Fastpasses you got as a DVC member.  That is a great perk!

If you ever want to visit Universal Studios, the hotels there are very nice.  It's been a while, but we visited Universal and stayed a couple of nights at the Hard Rock on one trip and the Royal Pacific on another.  Those are great hotels, and the early entry and front of the line privleges are great- especially during busy times.

The totem poles you saw at the MK have always been there.  Those are not from the Fort.  The Fort used to have its own totem poles, but they were taken down a while back.  There is still one standing in a remote location at the Fort.  Let me know if you want to see it and I'll tell you where it is.

I hope you remember what Dave told you about how to tell Chip and Dale apart.  Not knowing is grounds to have your Fiend card revoked.

Don't worry about getting a ticket from the cameras you saw at the Disney traffic lights.   While there are a lot of Florida local governments making a mint from red light cameras, Disney has not yet jumped on that bandwagon.  And I don't think they will.  That would not be a very popular thing with guests.  So, if you were on Disney property, which it sounds like you were, you're in the clear.

Dale is the one with the red nose.  Chip has the dark nose, which I can remember because it looks like a chocolate chip.

Black nose = chocolate chip.  Got it!  Now TCD can't take my membership card away.

Your girls must not have the same burning desire to ditch their parents whenever the opportunity presents itself as mine do.  I would think it is because we have been to WDW together as a family so many times, but y'all have been there a bunch too.  No telling.

FP for PP - :rofl2:  :flush2: .  Love it.

The drink was great.  GG was fine too - not my favorite spot by any means, but the food was okay and the service was fine.  The character interaction was good too, so I'm definitely glad we went but I doubt it will be high on my list to return to.

That looks like Sangria.

When you're right, you're right.  And you, Dave, are right.  Must have been an alcohol-induced amnesia problem.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who has had significant difficulties getting on FF lately!  I was starting to get a complex.

I just got the regular photopass CD package - not the "plus" one.  It was definitely worth it this time (even with the higher price) since I was able to use the same purchase over the two trips.  Plus, those pics are the only ones that prove I was there at all!

The DVC FPs were awesome.  Sadly, those were a one time only deal.  Next trip we'll be back in line with everyone else again.

I still may do Universal again, but like you say, I would definitely want to stay there at least for a night.  But I don't know if I could ever get Ray out of the WDW gates!

I would love to know where the remaining totem pole is!  It's not where the Teepees are (is that over Thanksgiving?), are they?

See above about Chip and Dale - got it!

Yay about the Disney not being likely to ticket me!  I've seriously been trying to beat Ray to the mailbox each day.  I haven't told him about my infraction and he'll have a fit if I get a huge ticket for an illegal U turn on a red light!  Hopefully since I was smack dab in front of DTD, I'll skate without getting hit!

Ooo, I would like to see the totem pole on our next visit.  :jumpforjoy  Please please please.

I agree!!!

More tonight!  Thanks for your comments!
