The second theme park built at the Walt Disney World Resort officially marks its 30th anniversary today. Guests began celebrating at the park over the weekend, with D23 members attending a special Epcot 30th Anniversary Celebration at World Showplace that featured special presentations by Disney Legends and Imagineers.

Guests visiting the park today will receive a commemorative button and a 30th anniversary theme park map, the latter of which our partners at the park were kind enough to give to us to share with all of you! The document looks back at how the Epcot guide map has changed as the park evolved over the years.

The fun will continue this afternoon with Epcot history presentations in World Showplace courtesy of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club. These presentations are included in park admission and are limited in seating.

  • 1-2 p.m. – Designing the Future – Past and Present: A panel of Disney Imagineers remembers 30 years of building tomorrow!
  • 4:30–6 p.m. – Epcot: How it Changed the World with Marty Sklar
  • 6:30–8 p.m. – Epcot: How it Changed the World with Marty Sklar

Today there will also be an anniversary moment at the America Gardens Theatre at 3 p.m., which will feature Disney leaders and performances by Mariachi Cobre and Voices of Liberty. (Seating is limited). Tonight’s presentation of “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” will also feature a special 30th anniversary tag.

If you’re at home celebrating in spirit today, be sure to check out this video, in which D23’s Steven Clark and Disney Legends Bill “Sully” Sullivan, Bob Matheison and Charlie Ridgway take a look back at the history of the park.

Epcot Video Flashback: Watch Spaceship Earth Emerge

posted on October 1st, 2012 by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager

Our look into Epcot history continues this week with a rare timelapse video that shows the construction of the park’s iconic attraction, Spaceship Earth.

This clip shows the construction of the attraction’s external geosphere from start to finish. Inside, the attraction told (and continues to tell) the story of human communication and the many technologies we’ve used over the years to express ourselves and connect with others.

The attraction opened 30 years ago today, on October 1, 1982. Happy anniversary!

Take a look back at Epcot in the posts below:

Epcot's 30th - the day so far

Oct 01, 2012 | 10:15am EDT

Epcot turns 30 today and the fans are out in full force. Special guide maps, times guides, and pins were handed out (see photos below) at the tunstiles after the park opened 30 minutes early, with good sized lines at each turnstile. Immediately on opening, the merchandise buying frenzy kicked into full force with lines soon extending all the way from Leave a Legacy to Mouse Gear. Causing a guest flow issue, the line was later rerouted to the other side, with the line then extending all the way to World Showcase Plaza. Check out a quick cell phone video of the line.

Epcot celebrates 30th anniversary through songs and speeches with special Walt Disney World presentation

by Ricky Brigante

epcot-30.jpg

In a surprisingly long, 45-minute special presentation that narrowly avoided the rain, Walt Disney World celebrated the 30th anniversary of Epcot today with speeches and songs commemorating the milestone. Along with other history presentations scattered throughout the day, Disney paid tribute to three decades of Epcot history with performances by Mariachi Cobre and the Voices of Liberty, two musical acts that have entertained guests since the park first opened on October 1, 1982, with several of today’s talented performers having performed in the park since that opening day.

The presentation took place in the America Gardens Theatre and featured speeches from current Epcot vice president Erin Youngs, former Epcot vice president and current senior vice president at Walt Disney World Jim McPhee, and president of Disney theme park operations in the United States and Paris Meg Crofton. Concluding with a bang, Cast Members representing pavilions, attractions, stores, and restaurants throughout the park congregated on and around the stage as fireworks and confetti were shot off as the crowd shouted, “Happy anniversary Epcot!”

I was watching the Disney World Personal Shopper's epcot shopping trip this afternoon on facebook. I love the idea of handbags made from last year's F&W banners. Can't wait to see a couple in person...
