This would seem to discredit the rumors that talked about RFID wristbands for FastPass+, which would be great IMO. It would seem they would just put that info on you KTTW card with RFID technology rather than use an additional wristband. I believe Lou said something similar awhile back.

RFID will rule the world, WDW.

I've posted before that RFID is nothing new at WDW.

It's been used in CM ID cards for a couple of years. Every single piece of CM costumes you see has a RFID tag embedded in it, and backstage gates have the readers.

KTTW, tickets, Fastpasses, soft drink cups and mugs, and merchandise are just some of the things using RFID.

If they wanted to extend its use, they could just give you a RFID badge to wear and then they could track you whenever you got on or in an attraction, purchased something, entered or exited your room, used WDW transportation, etc. Kinda scary isn't it?

The technology is there and the software and hardware are available at a fairly low price.

It's being used at conferences and conventions on a regular basis.

If you attend a conference and no one scans or manually logs you in or out of a session where you need verification in order to get credit for it, RFID baby.

They could be doing that anyway. Lots of guests wear their IDs on a lanyard out in the open, so strategically placed RFID readers could read the cards. (Isn't that why all the metal wallets are the fad to prevent RFIDs from being read just by getting near you?)

No, they can't be doing it now. RFID systems have a finite range. Every RFID system currently being used at WDW or that may be used in the near future are short range systems.

The systems being used or tested now are detecting RFID tags that are just a few inches away at best. The long range systems need readers and RFID tags that will work feet or even yards away instead of contact or inches away.

But as I said, no big deal. It's already out there.

As for the metal cases, they may just be a preemptive thing.

I could be wrong, but I'm not aware of long range systems for CC in use.

Also, all RFID tags can't be detected by all RFID readers. The data base connected to the RFID system makes it a discreet system.

Disney has announced that they are in the process of updating door locks at WDW resorts to a new wireless, RFID based system, over the next year.

As part of the transition, KTTW cards will be changing to the new RFID technology.

Currently the following resorts have been converted and are using the new cards:

Art of Animation

Contemporary

BoardWalk

Yacht & Beach Club

Further info is that Guest Relations locations have begun using the new KTTW cards also, meaning Guests at any WDW resorts may be issues one of the new cards.

Design of the new cards has changed a little...

I'm putting aside a day just to go look at the new door locks, can't wait.
