Grumpy and Grandma 740 Posted June 2, 2012 Author Report Share Posted June 2, 2012 The ice chunks get bigger and more frequent.Grandma watching the scenery and the ice floating by.Another waterfall.Seals lounging on the ice flow.A small sightseeing boat on the way out.A group of ducks.A smaller glacier. I don't know what is with photo-bucket I have reduced the size of all the pics, sometimes it works sometimes not.We say good-bye to the glacierApparently the ice flow where the seals were "sun bathing" broke up after the smaller sightseeing boat and the our ship went by.Next stop.They don't have to worry about neighbors.We are docked.What you would see if you lived in SKAGWAY.Some of DCL's competition. We thought that town would be a zoo but that was not the case.We attempted to use the POS since there was a lift equipped shuttle, but this is what we encountered as we went to leave. Believe it or not they lifted Linda and the scooter on to the ramp. (She was a little nervous) The tide made things difficult for the ship's crewAs usual the POS got this far and stopped.We finally made it into the "booming metropolis" of SKAGWAY. 7 blocks long, 3 blocks wide.As we anticipated the POS did not co-operate so we went back to the ship for a couple hours until it was time for our train ride to FRAZIER, BC and then a bus ride to LIARSVILLE.This was picking up some passengers for a "town" tour.We got a quick bite to eat up by the pool. I thought the snow and pool would make a good pic. They kept the pool water at 90 but the breeze as we cruised would still make it a little "chilly".Next up our train ride. I still have the full size pics on my hard drive, but it keeps the internet pics at a reasonable size. Grumpy and Grandma 740 Posted June 2, 2012 Author Report Share Posted June 2, 2012 Our trip on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad.The train follows the path of the gold rush up to FRAZIER, BC. and beyond, but FRAZIER is as far as we went. We then hopped on a bus for the trip back down to LIARSVILLE.Usually all tours meet in one of the theaters or lounges before heading out to the busses, but we were allowed to get on the bus early to avoid the crowd since Linda was walking. I have to give a "Hats off" to Anthony who handles the shore excursions for being so accomodating.Working our way to the bus.Then:Linda and Claire of the train.One set of engines.We start out on our journey. Again a lot of beautiful scenery and when you look at the terrain you wonder how people actually walked and climbed the area.Looking through the trees you can see the ship in the harbor.The SKAGWAY River.Up, up we go.The US border check point. We stop here on the way back. It's actually about 6 miles south of the border for some reason.Still climbing.Looking back.A couple waterfalls.The road we will ride back on.Higher and higher.We're going to cross that bridge.Snow.The next train behind us.Starting over the bridge.On the bridge.Not to the top yet.May be getting close to pic limit, next installment to follow soon. Grumpy and Grandma 740 Posted June 2, 2012 Author Report Share Posted June 2, 2012 Train ride continued.Heading into one of the tunnels on the route.You can tell we're really climbing. More and more snow, smaller and fewer trees.An abandon tressle.Snow is piled up next to the tracks.The train in front of us was a shorter tour so the switchman is waiting for us to go and then will move the engine and start back down.Well we made it to Whitepass which is the actual border between the US and BC.A lake along the way.Just remember some of the snow has already melted.The trees are so short and skinny because they are subjected to 80-90 mph winds. We were told many are over 100 years old.It's amazing some of the streams & lakes are still frozen, others are not.Almost to FRAZIER.Next we start back down on the bus heading to LIARSVILLE. I didn't get any pics where we actually boarded the bus since it is CANADIAN customs and they frown on pics for security reasons.We stopped at a pull off on the way down and.......This was also there. It has various plaques imbedded in it from various organizations, Kiwanis, etc.The view.Took a couple pics from the bus window. The pole is so the "snow plow" driver knows where the edge of the road is.Our last stop before heading back to the ship.LIARSVILLE is a replica of how the miners and other explorers lived during the Gold Rush.The most important "TENT".A house?The "BLACKSMITH".The "TAILOR".They put on a small skit and also show you how to pan for gold.A few try to "Strike it Rich".Back at the Ship.Up next a little later. My concern about taking the MH was the roads and beating the s--t out of it. We had a chance to take a couple caravans but they were 6-7 weeks and almost double the cost of the cruise plus fuel.
