Limits on Duffy the Bear Merchandise

He's definitely cute, but I know if I bought one he'd end up being a pillow or toy for some furball mutt (take your pick).

Bz has an Eeyore "pillow" in her crate at home (5 years old not a chew mark on it), a baby Goofy "pillow" in her crate in the camper, and Brady has a baby Pluto "ball" shaped stuffy that's his favorite camper toy.

Spoiled rotten pups... :)

Absolutely, I'd like a raise.

I actually like "Duffy the Disney Bear", that's his full name. He was originally just called the Disney Bear.

He has a cute back story.

I've always figured that Disney saw the enormous success of the Build A Bear Workshop and decided they needed a piece of the pie. Are you saying there is a different back story than that?

You wouldn't believe how much the first few colored disney bears before duffy sell for on ebay. Saw one once go for over $1,000. Made me watch for them at yard sales ever since.

There's an old thread on MiceChat I read a while back with page-by-page pics and discussion of Duffy's book. http://micechat.com/forums/tokyo-disney-resort/118708-story-duffy-disney-bear-pictures.html

I'll have to admit, after 2 trips to the fort this year, my kids were hooked on Duffy the Disney bear after watching his bedtime story every 10 minutes on one of the in-house TV stations. Of course we had to buy each a Duffy bear with my son getting the nite time duffy like the boy on the TV did and my daughter instisting on the Duffy with sailor outfit like the girl got. We even bought the Duffy book which tells his cute back story as Lou says. I will say my daughter has been reading that book every night since the last week of march. So I guess in my opinion it was worth buying. Duffy is kinda OK in my book now

There was no bedtime story or anything else on the resort TV channels when we were there last and the CM I spoke to in Epcot had no idea where Duffy came from or any back story.....so we were clueless what the deal was. We thought maybe it was a Disney Cruise thing as we have never been on a cruise. Either that or we walked into a disney themed build-a-bear workshop. Does the bear read a book during the bedtime story. Maybe my youngest would have enjoyed that if it was around then? Now I think she would be over it.

Excerpted from the Wikipedia version...

Duffy the Disney Bear is a Disney character that can be found at Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park in California, Walt Disney World in Florida, Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris. As the story goes, Minnie Mouse created Duffy for Mickey Mouse as he was packing for a long voyage at sea. Duffy is available for purchase and at "meet and greets."

Although originally created for and briefly sold at the Disney World Once Upon a Toy shop in Orlando in 2002, Duffy only became popular after Oriental Land executives adopted the character, gave it a name and a backstory, and aggressively marketed it in the Tokyo DisneySea park. Japanese fans took to it and some of them started to carry around multiple Duffy plush bears during their visits to the park. The My Friend Duffy show replaced a Donald Duck-themed show at the American Waterfront Cape Cod Cook-Off hamburger restaurant in 2010.

Duffy was previously known as "The Disney Bear" with an entirely different backstory. The original story found on the tag of the first released bear's ear said that Mickey brought his favorite bear to the Magic Kingdom. Mickey sat in front of the castle wishing that he had a friend with him to share the excitement and magic of the park. Tinker-bell appears and sprinkles pixie dust on Mickey's bear, bringing it to life. Mickey then hugs the bear and a Mickey-shape appears on the bear's face, forever bonding Mickey and his new friend.

...Duffy is unique among Disney characters in that he was not first featured in a Disney movie or television show until he made his television debut in the 2010 Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade. He also is on his own Bedtime Story Channel in Walt Disney World.

If you see photos of guests walking around Tokyo DL you'll frequently see young adults carrying Duffy around... and sometimes not-so-young adults. :)
