memouse 0
I hope I am putting this in the right spot.I am wondering at what age to you allow your kiddies to go to the comfort station alone or with a sibling. We are frequent campers, but it's never been an issue because who cares how they look bumming around the local state parks But, at Disney we may run into bathroom gridlock. My DH suggested allowing our DD12 and DD6 go the comfort station to shower. My reaction was (and still is!!) absolutely, positively not!!! There are crazies everywhere. Even if our campsite is right next to the CS, who knows what could happen.I pretty much have my mind made up.... no CS trips without a parent. But... am I over reacting? I may possibly consider letting the girls go while DH goes to the men's CS.Interested in your thoughts!!!Jean
ImDownWithDisney 342
No way in hell! Seems like I remember a story last year about a guy meeting an underage girl at the Fort in a CS for some relations. I would hate to have to kill a person while on vacation. Granny 10
God gave us instincts for a reason. If you are uncomfortable with it then go with your feelings. I have two grown daughters and they still remind us how horrible it was that we all wore matching hats at Disney World so we could find each other easily in a crowd if we got separated. I would have them handcuffed to us still but my oldest is 39 and she has 8 kids so it would be hard to get in the restroom at the same time. We will all be there at the end of November. Two kids are in wheelchairs and she is assigning each of us 2 kids to be responsible for. I'm volunteering for the two in wheelchairs.
BRDof3...Rob 40
I'll buck the trend here, and say maybe. If we're close enough to the CS then I wouldn't have a problem. The story about the guy meeting the underage girl is true, but that was a mutually arranged assignation. He wasn't trolling the CS's looking for unannounced prey. We tent camped for years and I let the kids go to the CS as a group. They know how to yell and make a fuss, I wasnt' too worried about them. That being said, that was one of the reasons I wanted the TT. The CS is on-board and completely private. Sensei 18
In my opinion, 12 should be old enough to be cautious and to also protect the 6 year old. However, this is entirely dependent on where I'm camping. If the Fort was crowded, I would probably walk them over and back. If not so crowded, then perhaps not. homebrew

If you are uncomfortable with it then go with your feelings.I think Granny says it best. Always remember what is "right" for you is not always the same for others and vice versa. My husband and I tend to be stricter about things like this and he is even stricter than me. I have on occasion let the girls run over real quick if we are near the CS. Having the TT does help, but sometimes that bathroom is occupied and they just can't wait.
DaveInTN 3,247
We have let our 3 oldest daughters (15, 14 and 11) go to the CS together to shower. They absolutely MUST stay together though. One time one of them finished before the others and headed back to the RV alone. She won't make that mistake again. I agree with others though...you have to follow your instincts for your family.
Starbuc71 162
Same reason why some parents allow their children to wear slippers (or bare feet) and PJ's to shop at wal-mart and some do not. It's your choice but I like Sensei's response homebrew

It's your choice but I like Sensei's responseOk this just made me laugh because last week I had to drop off my son for basketball practice at school one night and then I was going to have to meet hubby from the airport while he returned his rental car. My youngest DD asked if she could just wear her pajamas. I said sure as I was not planning on us getting out of the car. DH calls to say how far out he is (he had gone to Atlanta for work) and I told him I was going to take the girls to Walmart for a bit. We get over to the parking lot and the older DD looks over and sees her sister is wearing pajamas. I told them we couldn't go in or we might end up on the "People of Walmart" Page on the internet. :rofl2:

Momof6....aka Marty 769
I would not allow it, but if there is an urgent situation, you could be prepared with a whistle on a loop to hang around the neck. My friend did this with her kids when they camped. They could go to the CS, but they had to wear the whistle and not hesitate to use it.

We're talkin Fort Wilderness here....not Times Square.
memouse 0
Denny,I may be a littel "trifle paranoid" as you say, but I am happy to step on the side of caution for the sake of my kids. Fort Wilderness is most definately not Time Square, but all it takes is one lunatic. Could it be possible that lunatics enjoy the fort also? Or go where they are least expected? And I really didn't say my DH would "escort" my DD12 to the CS. I said he would be in the men's CS while they are in the women's... not like he would be waiting outside to "escort" them. :)Have a nice day!!!
MLM5.. aka Judy 97
I'll go against the grain here, I think it depends on your children, my DD's 11 and 10 usually shower together at the CS, I always request a site close enough where I can see them walk to and from. I do not let them go alone however, shoot, I dont even like walking to the CS at night for a potty break alone, just because you never know when you might run into a rabid squirrel.. :rofl2: Seriously though, as it's been said, go with your instinct. If your not comfortable with it, then don't! Only you know your child well enough to know how they would react to being approached by someone. All children are different. mouseketab.....Carol 1,261
I agree with Judy on this one. Yes the world has changed; but what has changed even more is kids are way less independant. They are over programmed, scheduled and watched. They are not being taught to think on their feet and handle situations. The best thing to do is to use common sense and to teach your kids to be aware of their surroundings and what to do. homebrew and Otter Spotter aka Debbie
