Changes this year for Halloween at Downtown Disney

Sep 16, 2011

This year will see some changes made to the Halloween offerings at Downtown Disney. Instead of handing out candy, there will be enhanced entertainment. If you are looking for candy, an available option is "Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party" at the Magic Kingdom.

Disney World ends free trick-or-treating event at Downtown Disney

A longtime Halloween treat at Downtown Disney will be but a ghostly memory this year. Walt Disney World has discontinued its free two-day trick-or-treating event at Downtown Disney, a spokeswoman confirmed. Happy Haunting will not take place Oct. 30 and 31.

The event has become so popular — and crowded — that it has outgrown being a good guest experience, said Zoraya Suarez, a Disney World media relations manager.

As a parent, I was disappointed to hear Happy Haunting has ended. For the last several years, my family has enjoyed the trick-or-treating, cool photo backdrops and live entertainment with friends. It’s something we look forward to each year — a spooky dance party, a live storyteller, a magician and more. Some guests report trick-or-treating at Downtown Disney as far back as nine years ago.

But I understand why Disney has chosen to end the event. In just three years, we’ve seen the trick-or-treating change from candy spots positioned inside stores to stations placed outside with roped lines for candy seekers. And when the dates fell on weekend days, the crowds increased, of course.

Although Happy Haunting is not on the calendar, Downtown Disney is not forgoing the autumn season. Restaurants will have fall menu items, and there will be seasonal decorations and enhanced entertainment during October. Some entertainment will be listed in a special Times Guide, and some will be designed to surprise guests, Suarez said.

“We hope this will make it possible for guests to enjoy the offerings at Downtown Disney over a longer period of time,” she said.
