Disney at Work...

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Underway

IMG_2445.jpg

Game technologies being tested in May at Disneyland.

In a MousePlanet article back in April I announced that new interactive games would soon be established throughout many of the Disney parks and resorts. Similar to the concepts around the KimPossible World Showcase Adventures, participants would search around for clues that would come to life as they unscramble a mystery themed to that park land or resort.

In a few weeks work will be underway on the first of these at the Magic Kingdom. Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, a name trademarked back in 2010, will have games themed to each land. It's believed that the first land to receive this will be Adventureland, followed by Frontierland.

To make this happen, a major staging area will need to be created. Word has been out on the street that the store at the Firehouse on Main Street, U.S.A. is closing soon. That is because the Firehouse will be remodeled to be the headquarters of the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom games. The theming will stay a firehouse, it will simply be repurposed as a gaming headquarters. Thus, the donation of fire patches can still be a part of the firehouse's legacy.

100_2584.JPG

Firehouse is headquarters to the new Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.

Space adjacent to the Frontierland Shootin' Arcade will serve as one of the "outposts" for the games, similar to the kiosks found for Kim Possible throughout Epcot's World Showcase.

IMG_2914.JPG

Frontierland Shootin' Arcade under "wraps" during remodeling.

Unlike the Kim Possible games at Epcot, these games apparently won't involve cell phones or electronic pads. Rather, guests will be given cards that will signal or provide QR and/or RFID codes in some way. The card codes will randomly signal a new game and will carry the code necessary for you to successfully carry the game through to completion. It is similar to the Mickey Midship Detective Agency aboard the Disney Dream, where using your badge you move around the ship showing a 2-D bar-code that would take you through the particular sequence of that game. This way guests will not have to carry or return a phone or electronic piece of equipment.

When Disney's new Alauni resort opens, interactive games are planned as part of that experience as well along the Menehune Adventure Trail. Because those playing the games will be guests of the hotels (and will have their credit cards on file), it's easier to upgrade the games so that they use an electronic pad (not an iPad) to work through the activity. Therefore, those activities will have a much greater electronic interface involved.

IMG_5017.JPG

This model showcased by Imagineers at D23, suggests

lots of outdoor areas for the Menhune Adventure Trail

Returning to the Magic Kingdom, these games are not just a "nice-to-have" on the side. They are part of a major strategy to better direct the guest experience as the park has had to close off areas and in anticipation of capacity increases as the park premieres new attractions over the next couple of years. Already the park has been struggling to maintain the upkeep as it has taken down many areas. Much has been said in recent weeks on Disney Fan Boards about the condition of park attractions like Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain. With the major closure of Toon Town Fair at the Magic Kingdom, as well as lesser attended areas in Fantasyland (Ariel's Grotto and Pooh's Playful Spot) for the new major Fantasyland additions, it is simply difficult for the park to close and rehab major attractions. The park has tried to compensate by creating a new meet and greet experience in Town Square and by trying additional parade and show times to the schedule. This is one additional effort in that guest management strategy.

IMG_2888.JPG

Banners have been added to the Theater

in hopes to improve attendance

which is not meeting the hoped for expectation,

especially in the afternoons.

Remember, even though Magic Kingdom's attendance in 2011 was soft with a 1.5% decline in attendance, it still reigns supreme as the number one park in attendance in the world. There has been much positive (for good reason) about how Disney California Adventure has managed the crowds with a major expansion going on throughout, but keep in mind that there are more than 10 million people going through the Magic Kingdom's gates each year (16.97) compared with DCA (6.29). Meanwhile, Disneyland, who is second in attendance (15.98), can take down attractions (as it did for several months with Splash Mountain) because its core audience is return guests and annual pass holders who ride those attractions all the time, as opposed to those attending the Magic Kingdom, whose opportunity to visit and ride an attraction like Splash is either a first time event, or a once every several year event.

Therefore, the demand on the Magic Kingdom is much greater. Sorcerers in the Magic Kingdom and other efforts right now are the most strategic way to soften the blow of taking down attractions for refurbishment. And when Fantasyland Forest opens, it will be an important key to occupy the huge (and perhaps all time record) attendance boost that park will soon be receiving.

Banners added, really. How does that have any impact on whether or not people go? Unless the writer of that piece was told by Disney that was the reason for the banners, that's ridiculous.

I'm not going, oh, wait, there are banners, let's go.

A more plausible reason was that they were delayed.

First Look: Pictures and Video of Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Play-Testing

Jan 9, 2012 by wdwntadmin ico_post_comments.png2 Comments ico_post_date.png Posted under: The Magic Kingdom

The new Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom game ran a short play-test earlier today and our own Scott Smith was on the scene to be amongst the first to cast spells and battle the Disney Villains. The journey begins at the Main Street Fire House where guests are handed a map and some spell cards. Merlin and the cast member will assist you in training before you embark on your mission to rid the Magic Kingdom lands from the resurrected Disney Villains. The main antagonist of the story is Hades who will bring the other Villains back to life to take over the park by capturing all of the pieces of the Crystal of the Magic Kingdom that are spread throughout the lands.

Here’s a look at the maps guests are given and the current Sorcerers game window locations:

FantasylandMap-772x600.jpg

MainStreetUSA-771x600.jpg

AdventurelandMap-771x600.jpg

LibertySquareMap-771x600.jpg

Merlin instructs you to your first location. At each window, you must press your key card against the key hole to open the portal. Once the first portal is open, Merlin will appear and usually explains he is too busy and will hand you off to a corresponding hero character from a film. That character will give you all of the story information you need to know. Before facing the main Villian in your story, you are usually given a second window where you fight a henchman of the villian. Regardless of what happens in the middle windows, the final battle will be with the main villain of your story. Once you have foiled this villain, you can move on to another land or choose to walk away. If you do walk away, you can reportedly return later in the day or even later in your vacation. The ultimate goal is to free all the lands of villains leading to an eventual final battle with Hades.

As far as the cards are concerned, there are 70 in all and it appears each has its own separate animation. For example, with the Mickey’s Magic Beans card, beans would fly at the enemy and beanstalks would grow upwards (this will be much clearer in the provided video). Here’s a look at the cards Scott was provided:

Enough explaining in text, it’s probably a lot easier to just show you a video of Scott and the game in action:

he new Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom has been testing lately with park guests. One of our readers sent in some pictures of it in action, and a brief description.

“We did a few of the games, pretty fun although a few bugs to work out. I have included a few pix if anyone is interested. Basically you have a "Key Card" to start each station, the card has an RFID in it that you hold up to a logo and start the station. At some times you need to cast a spell with some additional cards, there are over 70 spell cards and they can be traded apparently.”

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom game begins public testing – Photos and Video

dsc08399.jpg

A new interactive role playing game began public testing at the Magic Kingdom park at Walt Disney World today. It’s called Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. Let’s take a look at how it works.

dsc08398.jpg Guests will start out at the fire station, near city hall. Look for a sign indicating they’re looking for sorcerers.

dsc08394.jpg Once inside, cast members will give you a map, a key card and five spell cards. They they’ll take you to a screen they call a mystic portal where you’ll first meet Merlin the magician, who along with the cast member, explain how to play.

388233_10150511584159330_8093464329_8708173_2140019987_n.jpg Here’s a look at the cards we were first given. Although along the way we ran into some other guests playing the game and traded some of our cards for theirs. There are 70 cards in all, so it will take quite a few games to collect them all.

photo1.jpg This is the map guests are given. Besides Adventureland, other areas of the map show Fantasyland, Main Street, and Liberty Square with Frontierland.

Each land features a few different story lines, each based on a different Disney movie. You may be interacting with characters from The Emporer’s New Groove in Adventureland, or Pocahontas or The Princess and the Frog in Frontierland.

dsc08411.jpg Once you arrive at the right location, look for this keyhole, then hold your keycard up to it to “open the portal”.

dsc08409.jpg It’s also important that you find this symbol on the ground and stand here for the game to work properly.

dsc08435.jpg Before it’s open, the “mystic portal” may look just like a wall, or a poster, or it may be part of a larger window display.

During the game, Disney characters onscreen will tell you a story about how Hades has teamed up with the bad guys from a particular Disney movie (such as Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, etc.) and they need you to help stop them.

At the end of the presentation in each location, you’ll be told which symbol on the map you need to look up and head to next. There are five play areas in each land. You may visit them all during your game or you may visit a spot more than once.

dsc08402.jpg At some of the locations, you’ll need to battle the bad guys. This is where your spell cards come into play. When directed to do so, hold the spell card of your choosing up in front of you towards the screen and watch as the bad guy is hit with it. All of the cars do something different onscreen. For example, if you use Eve’s Laser Blast spell card, you’ll see Eve’s hands appear on screen and shoot the bad guy. If you hold up Mowgli’s Swinging Vine spell card, you’ll see a swinging vine hit the bad guy.

dsc08441.jpg After doing this at several of the locations and furthering the story until you have defeated the bad guy, you can stop playing, or you have the option to head to another land at the park and try another storyline. If you keep your cards, you can even finish playing later that day or even later during your vacation.

Here’s a video showing parts of the game in action:

http://attractionsmagazine.com/blog/2012/01/08/sorcerers-of-the-magic-kingdom-game-begins-public-testing-photos-and-video/#more-11383

Because the game is still testing, more features and gameplay will most likely be added. As you can see on the Mickey spell card below, there are number values on each card relating to the spell’s attack, boost and shield that aren’t in use yet. We also noticed while testing that you can use more than one spell card at a time, even though nothing indicates that’s possible. Stay tuned for more details and let us know about your experience after you play.

Examining and listing the spell cards of the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom game at Walt Disney World

Jan 242012 Filed under: Disney, Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World Posted by: Matt Roseboom

screen-shot-2012-01-24-at-1-43-30-pm.jpg

The new Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom game is currently testing at the Magic Kingdom park at Walt Disney World. It’s a role-playing, trading card game which has guests trying to defeat Disney Villains who are working to take over the theme park. Armed with magic spells in the form of special cards, players must go to the magic portals throughout the park that lead them to the animated villains’ hiding places.

By casting different magical spell cards, guests can do battle with Yzma, Scar and other ne’er do wells hiding throughout the land. From fireballs to frantic frogs and cyclones, there are spells to bring down each and every villain. But just how many different spell cards are there? And how can you collect them all? Below we’ll tell you all we know about the game and try to compile a list of all the cards.

Click Here to find out more about how the game works.

Right now, when you sign up to play the game, you’re given five cards. We’ve been told there are 70 cards in all, which matches up with what is printed on the cards. But if you take a closer look, you’ll notice different symbols above the numbers. Above each card we’ve seen are what look like either a full moon, crescent moon, solid star, double star or a lightning bolt.

01-copy.jpgSo, are there 70 cars in all, with groupings of different symbols, or are there five sets of 70 cards, totaling 350 cards? We don’t know yet.

To confuse things even more, we have some cards that are exactly alike, except they have different numbers and symbols. One example: we have a card with Bolt’s Super Bark that is 24/70 with a crescent moon and one that’s 60/70 with a solid star.

Along with that, we also have cards that have the same numbers and symbols (or different symbols) that are different cards. For example: one 12/70 card is Merlin’s Fireball and one 12/70 is Mr. Incredible’s Power Heave.

So do some sets of cards have duplicate cards or are these simply production changes because the game is still in testing? One other difference we’ve seen that probably is a production change, is that some cards are square on the corners and some are rounded.

We’ve heard that once the game testing ends and it begins full-time, guests will continue to receive only five cards when playing. But we’ve heard rumors the cards will be for sale in the park’s gift shops.

One thing we know, you don’t actually have to have the cards to play. Since the game recognizes the cards via a camera, print-outs of the cards will work as well. You can even take a picture of a card on your smart phone and hold your phone’s screen up and the game will recognize the card. That’s a handy way for frequent visitors to play without having to bring their cards with them each visit.

TIP: You can cast more than one spell at a time by holding up more than one card at a time. Of course, you won’t be able to do this if you’re holding up a photo of the card with your cell phone.

We’ve been told the testing of the game is set on “easy” and that the attributes listed on the cards have no effect yet, but that there will be a medium and hard setting once the game fully begins and the spell’s attributes will effect the game.

Below is an ongoing list of the cards we’ve seen, listed with their numbers, grouped by their number’s symbol, and listing the attributes on the cards. Let us know if you have any new or different cards to add.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Jan. 30, 2012 - Inspiration meets innovation when Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom opens to Walt Disney World Guests in late February of this year. This immersive, role-playing game features unprecedented interaction with Disney characters who come to life in previously hidden areas throughout Magic Kingdom park.

Families, friends and individuals can take on the animated Disney Villains by casting spell cards featuring Rafiki, Rapunzel, Woozles and more than 60 other characters. Individually created by Disney artists and trading card game experts, these beautiful, collectible cards will come in packages of five free to Guests ready to take on the villains.

“Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom gives our Guests a new way to become the hero of the Disney story, taking Disney innovation to a new level,” said Jonathan Ackley, Producer & Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering. “It’s a great game of discovery and excitement that plays off our wonderful theme park and incredible family of Disney animated characters.”

Imagineers spent more than four years creating and perfecting this unique experience, which can be played in 15 to 20 minute segments throughout the Guests’ visit to the Magic Kingdom, or continuously for up to three to four hours. More than 95 minutes of original animation was created for Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom – equal to a full-length animated film.

While trading card games are popular with about 60 million people in the US, this is the first time players can experience the challenge in such a complex environment. Guests of all ages will love the storytelling, the engagement with Disney characters and the discovery of hidden details of the Magic Kingdom.

We have been playing Sorcerer's this past week. Right now I would have to say that the game will not hold the attention of smaller children under about 7 years or so. There really isn't anything interactive to do...you stand on the pad, listen to the video, show your spell card and get directed to the next portal. The portal will be in the same area where you've been playing in (like Adventureland) until you finish all the portals and you're told the villian is caught. (I believe there are 7 villians). We haven't finished all the areas yet, but I'm hoping the game will get more interesting as we finish more of it and as it gets more phases complete and the "points" and "spells" at the bottom of the cards start to mean something. Right now, in the beginning stages for us, it is slightly boaring...but then, we are not the target audience. Most of the kids we met at the portals are in the 17 to 22ish age group - college age - and in the "geek"/"gamer" category. They were very well informed about the game, had collected most of the 70 cards (you can get 5 new cards each day), and were eager to talk about the game and trade cards (apparently a couple are very hard to find). I think when the completely finished game is ready to play it will be something more like the trading card game "Magic: The Gathering" but on a video/interactive platform. Tomorrow we will be start playing the "official" game and see what's changed.

Here's a picture of a portal in one of the windows on Main Street...
