My impressions of the biggest changes from 1982 to now: The trees and vegetation have really filled in throughout the WS since then. Men's shorts were way too short in 1982. I know in the early years, they did not want the Disney characters in Epcot, so I guess the World Showcase characters were their attempt to give Epcot it's own identity.
