2017 NYE Event at the Fort- Mickey's Backyard BBQ

Recommended Posts

There's a new event planned for the Fort for this year's New Year's Eve.

It's a special NYE Backyard BBQ event.

The details:

New Year’s Eve BBQ

Ring in 2018 with a festive BBQ feast, live entertainment and exciting activities.

Highlights
Attend a spirited celebration with bluegrass music, a DJ, a video feed of Times Square and fantastic fun for all ages—including a visit from some beloved Disney friends! Be on the lookout for Mickey and Minnie, as well as Chip ‘n Dale.

At the end of the evening, sip champagne as you enjoy a breathtaking fireworks display.

Menu
Delight in a bountiful buffet featuring mouthwatering favorites, which may include:

  • A variety of meats, including smoked chicken, baked salmon, beef brisket and Italian sausage
  • Lobster macaroni and cheese
  • Baked potatoes and assorted toppings
  • A hot vegetarian meal option
  • Assorted cold salads, including kale salad, jicama carrot salad and roasted beet salad
  • Appetizers, including a cheese board, vegetable crudités, crackers, breads and fresh fruit
  • Kids’ options, like chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, hamburgers, hot dogs, fresh green beans and salad
  • Assorted desserts, like mini s’mores mason jars, cherry cheesecake and chocolate truffles

Menu items are subject to change.

When & Where
The New Year’s Eve BBQ begins at 8:30 PM on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at the Fort Wilderness Pavilion.

Price
This event is $95 per adult and $75 per child.

Reservations
Call (407) WDW-DINE or (407) 939-3463 to book the New Year’s Eve BBQ. Guests under 18 years of age must have parent or guardian permission to call.

For reference, the normal Backyard BBQ prices range from $62-72 per adult, so there's about a $20-30 upcharge for the New Year's Eve party.  There seem to be some food upgrades, though, so, the  price gouging isn't so bad by Disney standards.  I assume that unlimited beer and wine is included in the price, but that is not specifically mentioned.

The Disney Parks Blog has a slightly different description of this event:

Mickey’s New Year’s Eve BBQ at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort!

Join Mickey, Minnie and friends for a family-friendly barbecue at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort as they celebrate the new year at Mickey’s New Year’s Eve BBQ. During this special finger-licking, foot-stomping barbeque event, you’ll feast on mouth-watering items such as Bacon Jam Burger Sliders grilled on site, Wagon Wheel Mac’n’Cheese for the kiddos, and Mini S’mores served in Mason Jars!

In addition to this all-you-care-to-enjoy BBQ spread, you’ll get to enjoy the sounds of a live bluegrass band and a DJ. After dinner, cowpokes can mosey on over to the dance floor for line dancing led by Disney Friends! Then get ready to count down to midnight and watch the world-famous Magic Kingdom fireworks from a special viewing area.

I am intrigued by the reference to the "special viewing area" for the fireworks.   I wonder if that means they will rope off a part of the beach?  If so, not cool- as the beach gets very crowded on NYE.

IMHO  that's not a bad deal. Four hours worth of entertainment, A private fireworks viewing area, food, and drink for $95 isn't a bad price.   No it's not for everybody but try going to a private party in New York City or Las Vegas or any major metro area and find it cheaper. I bet you won't  find a better deal.

Many years ago DW and I went to a private party at the New York New York casino in Vegas for New Year's eve. Fortunately for us  my father-in-law was able to get us to comped tickets for the event. Tickets were selling for about $200 each.   If you could get them.  And there were no Disney characters. But we did get to meet and hang out with Pauly Shore. LOL   And yes he's just as goofy/stupid in person.

That seems to be the trick the whole month of December.  I managed to add a few nights to our stay at the beginning of the month, but I've had to pick them up a night at a time and I seem to have hit a wall.  I'll keep trying as we get closer. We've now got 9 reservations - poor DH was on the phone with Disney for an hour the other day getting them all linked up.  LOL

We've seriously considered staying through the holidays if we can get a site, but that seems unlikely.

Compared to some of the other NYE offerings at WDW, this is a bargain!

You are right about that.  There's another new event mentioned in that blog post I linked above.

It's a New Orleans themed party held in a ballroom at the Contemporary Resort.  It sounds nice:

Celebrate 2018’s arrival surrounded in sights, sounds and culinary sensations—inspired by New Orleans and The Princess and the Frog.

Calling all fine-dining aficionados: prepare to pamper your palate at an event you’ll remember for years to come!

During Down In New Orleans: A Disney New Year's Eve Dining Experience, you’re sure to discover the kind of affair that’s purely… unforgettable. It all begins as you saunter in amid the French Quarter Courtyard décor—where street signs and wrought-iron gates transport you right into the heart of the Big Easy.

Soon enough, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a bevy of action stations, each one sure to simmer your senses in unique and extraordinary flavors—from smoked salmon mousse cones and Kobe beef tartar to sheep’s milk ricotta gnocchi and oyster beignets fried on stage, right before your eyes!

Then, when dinner time finally arrives, you’ll be guided to a premiere dining destination. Art-adorned walls with visions of New Orleans grace the space, while tables covered in French-Quarter-inspired linens and centerpieces welcome you to take a seat.

As a classic jazz band infuses the atmosphere with the authentic sounds of N’awlins, rich scents invite you to savor every vibrant flavor: herb-crusted Louisiana redfish, crayfish étouffée, Black Angus beef cooked two ways, braised short ribs and roast filet of beef with truffled celery root silk.

Toward the evening’s end, a spirited vocalist will join the band and bring the classic sounds of legendary composer Randy Newman to life—all before you’re ushered into a private viewing area near the Porte Cochére for champagne and the unforgettable sights of world-famous Magic Kingdom fireworks.

From beginning to end, it’s a beautiful way to welcome 2018… and an experience you’re sure to remember well into the New Year!

What do you figure something like that would cost?

Hold on to your hat:

Down In New Orleans: A Disney New Year's Eve Dining Experience is available for $450 per Guest—tax and gratuity included.

Wow.

$450 per person.

That makes the NYE Backyard BBQ sound like a downright bargain.

I've heard through the grapevine that getting any holiday reservations at the Fort will be more difficult than usual this year. They always have some sites held back in reserve, but those have already been released and offered as options to guests whose trips were impacted by the Hurricane Irma closure.  Good for them, but bad for anyone else hoping to snag any kind of late reservation.

That would make sense.  I'm going to keep stalking for as many days as I can scavenge, but I seriously doubt we'll get anywhere close to the holidays.

We're like that for Thanksgiving.  Trying to get out last three nights premium, so we don't have to switch sites...but even if we do have to switch, at least we're there ☺

This will be our first NYE there, and maybe the first in 18 years that Tom and I stay up till midnight ??

We will be there from December 15th to January 2nd.  Last year we took the boat over to the Magic Kingdom and watched the fireworks from the area outside the park.  It was actually very nice.

I didn't think of that, I know that's how some friends of ours ended up with Thanksgiving reservations. I have even tried the looking for longer stays just to see if anything would come up and nothing does.

We said the same thing yesterday.  Right now we've got multiple levels of sites booked on the front and back and of our big reservation.  We hope we don't have to move, but don't actually care if we do.  :)

I've been trying for a while and have had zero luck with longer stay searches.  In fact it's been the opposite - on the front and back end of our stay the only way I could add days was one night at a time.  Which is why we now have 9 reservations (oy).

I know it's crazy to say this (NYE and all), but we are not big crowd people... so we may just find a sidewalk at the Fort somewhere, where we can see some fireworks and call it good.  lol

We may try and brave the masses at the beach... but I'm guessing that will be super crazy.  The locals will probably flood in

Question for those that have done NYE from the Fort before - how far do the beach crowds extend?  I'm wondering if you take the back path between 300 loop and Settlement, to the spot where you get a good view of the Contemporary, if that might be a less crowded spot along the lake with a decent view?

I know that Maryanne Miller and others used to go back there for the NYE fireworks. One year, there was a CM back there passing out hats to the guests.  But, that was probably 5 or 6 years ago.

I don't think it would be very crowded back there at all.  But, you will miss the audio, including the very important countdown to midnight.  I would miss that.

Good point.

I meant to post more about the experience of watching the NYE fireworks from the beach at the Fort- it's been several years since we've done it, but it's really not a bad experience.  In fact, it's kind of fun to be there with so many people.

For a long time, I would only buy Florida Resident Season Passes, which meant we were blocked out of the parks for NYE.  So, if we were at the Fort for NYE, we wouldn't be visiting the parks, and would spend the evening at the Fort.  They typically have a beach party on NYE, with music, dancing and activities from the youth staff. The last time we went, the twins were middle school age and the beach was wall to wall people at midnight.  There are a lot more drunk people on the beach on NYE than you will ever see the rest of the year.  One of our favorite memories is of a young drunk couple who were having a loud fight and break up right there on the beach a few minutes before midnight.  The guy was walking around carrying one of the rocking chairs from the Crockett's Tavern porch.  The twins can recite the whole argument word for word.  It was very memorable.

So, don't be afraid to go to the beach for the NYE fireworks.  It's fun.  And a much different vibe than any other night of the year.

Now that's entertainment!!  LOL
