Seniors 62 and over can visit some of America’s most beautiful national parks with the ridiculously good deal of $10 lifetime passes — at least until Aug. 28, when the cost of the pass makes a considerable jump to $80. A new option of a $20 annual pass will also become available at that time. 

To buy the pass before the August price hike, older folks have a few options. They can apply online at the National Parks Service website or through the mail. But the best way, according to the service, is to buy one at one of the many national parks it’s good at, as the parks service website is becoming overwhelmed with requests for the lifetime pass.

The pass gets seniors access to many of the country’s national parks for cheaper than they would with daily entry fees, which tend to run $25-$35. National parkland in Texas includes Big Bend National Park, Padre Island National Seashore and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

What is the Senior Pass?

A $10.00 lifetime pass that provides admittance to more than 2,000 recreation sites managed by six Federal agencies, with up to 100% of the proceeds being used to improve and enhance visitor recreation services.

At many sites the Senior Pass provides the pass owner a discount on Expanded Amenity Fees (such as camping, swimming, boat launching, and guided tours).

1. Who is admitted with a Senior Pass?

   The Senior Pass admits pass owner/s and passengers in a non-commercial vehicle at per-vehicle fee areas and pass owner + 3 adults, not to exceed 4 adults, where per-person fees are charged. (Children under 16 are always admitted free.)
   Note: Photo identification will be requested to verify pass ownership.

2. If I have more than four people in my car, how many passes do I need?

    

   • One pass covers the vehicle at sites that charge "per vehicle".
   • At "per person"; sites, the applicable fee will be charged for each additional person.

Even at $80 it is still a good deal. Depending upon where you go after three or four visits its paid for itself.

Yes it is, it's just a lot better at $10.

Not sure why they  made the change.

It was passed last year during the previous administration, and was supposed to take effect either the 1st of 2017 or during the first quarter of the year, but it's implementation was delayed, at first indefinitely.  When we got ours the rangers said they knew the increase was coming, but no one knew when.  I guess "When" arrived.
