I looked at the park and it looks like we would really enjoy it however... unfortunately, it's a bit far out for us. We're only in the area 3 nights and one of the stops we have planned is the Air Force Academy which looks to be about an hour away from this CG. Pre-dog, that would be fine as we'd be gone all day... now, nope. Because we'll be there in July, we can't leave him in the truck which means we'd only have about 4-5 hours before we'd need to be back to the RV to let him out.... so a 2 hour RT drive time would be a bit much Thank you though.... ETA: Okay... so we found a spot at Cheyenne Mountain State park, but only for two nights. I think we'll have to cross off the Air Force Academy as I think it's just going to be tough to do with the dog. Sigh... oh well. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Both times stayed at the BLM campsites right on the river just North of Town. They are first come-first served (at least when I was there, that may have changed), they have tables, fire rings and dry toilets. Very basic, but inexpensive and great views. There are several CGs in Moab and most all of them offer hot showers and dump station use for a fee if you are not staying there. We used the KOA just South of Town for showers and it appeared to be a nice clean place to stay. Be aware that Moab hosts several festivals during the year. One trip I made there was near the tail end of an Off-Road/Jeep Fest and the Town was PACKED. Luckily there were still some campsites available and the MtnBike Trails were uncrowded. The Slick Rock Trail is amazing, and the Town is nice, a real interesting mix of very different types of people, can't wait to go back again. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I've been going over and over our schedule, and am now rethinking Moab for this trip. Instead, time at Rocky National. Tough call...but I hope to do the balloon festival in Albuquerque in 2019... so we'll hit southern Utah then (Zion National looks prettier to me, than Moab...which is why I'm rethinking things). As mentioned above, Portal is supposed to be excellent. I don't know when you are going, but there is supposed to be MAJOR roadwork taking place at Arches National Park in 2017. You may want to check that out. The scenery is great and you can get a good feel for most of the attractions in a day to day and a half. If I had limited time I would rather spend the time down around Colorado Springs than RMNP. To me RMNP is more the type of place where you need to camp in the park for a few days to really get a feel for it. You can do a drive through on the main road but miss a lot if you don't hike to the various destinations. Also none of the campgrounds in the park have hookups so you will be dry camping. Another thing that can come into play is the limited RV size for some of the campgrounds which are as short as 30 ft. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I agree that RMNP is huge and better served by at least a 5-7 day trip but...I have 2 nights, so I'll take it ? We found a CG just outside of the park that I think is (basically) a dirt lot...but the site is a pull through, close to the park and has full hook-ups, so we're good with that. We only plan to sleep there, which means we'll only ask two things of the property: safety and quiet at night. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
