Katman1356...Jason 1,140
It is a controversial topic but Disney has just given us our first looks at the new Guardians of the Galaxy:Mission Breakout which is the update to the Tower of Terror ride in DIsney's California Adventure. Makes me wish I could actually ride this.disneyparks.disney.go.com/…/collectors-fortress-tr…/ A huge transformation is underway now at Disney California Adventure park, as The Collector’s Fortress takes shape at the site of what is now the Hollywood Tower Hotel. It will be home to a new adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, and today we have a detailed look at what the fortress will look like when the attraction opens summer 2017. The model pictured here was created by Walt Disney Imagineering to guide the transformation currently taking place on the exterior of the attraction. Every shade and detail you see here will be replicated in full size, as designers, builders and artists work to bring The Collector’s realm to life here at the Disneyland Resort. This “warehouse, fortress-like power plant” (as described here by Joe Rohde, Creative Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering) is designed to be intimidating and imposing, but also shimmering and regal. It will be the ideal location for The Collector to secure and show off his most prized acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. Featuring characters from the blockbuster films, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is an epic new adventure combining the familiar, breathtaking free-fall sensation with all-new visual and audio effects, including music inspired by the popular “Guardians of the Galaxy” film soundtrack. Guests will experience a variety of randomized ride experiences, so you never know which adventure you will get! Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! opens at Disney California Adventure park summer 2017. In the meantime, keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog as we reveal more about the story of this new attraction, re-introduce you to the characters from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films and take you behind the scenes as this comically high-energy, rocking new adventure comes to life. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUc1z2RF9qM
Tri-Circle-D 2,059
This still seems like such an odd decision to me. I thought Guardians of the Galaxy was a great movie, but I don't see it as worthy of having a major attraction themed after it. My understanding is that the plan is to create a Marvel-themed area at California Adventure, and that the new tower is part of what will be a bigger addition to the park. I also can't help but notice that in California, they can announce a major ride retheming and refurbishment of an attraction and deliver the final product way faster than they have done in Florida recently. WannaBeImagineer 98
I had assumed the ride would take place in the prison, you know the scene where they escape in the guard shack pod thing? That seemed like a perfect fit. But I guess being in the Collector's warehouse, they can have all kinds of visuals, do you think Howard the Duck will make an appearance? I think the ride could be great, but I'm also afraid its going to feel exactly the same, I mean they can't really change the route or anything... TCD I agree, how does California get their rides done so much faster? WBI

Maybe even use some of the memorabilia that used to be on the backlot tour as the Collectors collection.

LOL -Howard the Duck. My daughters are big on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this Collector character and the Infinity Stones or whatever he's looking for apparently are a big deal. I guess it makes sense to make the attraction about him. Personally, I don't have any strong feelings about this change- I have no love for the Twilight Zone theme, and this change could be cool. But, I don't like it when they take a good attraction and change it for no good reason instead of building something new. E.g. Test Track, Maelstrom, the Living Seas. Changes like this don't result in any net gain for guests. 15 hours ago, Katman1356...Jason said: You answered TCD's question. I think this will be almost all cosmetic and theming. Maybe even use some of the memorabilia that used to be on the backlot tour as the Collectors collection. Looking at the models and artwork Disney has released, I agree that it's clearly just going to be cosmetic and theming changes. But, that's what the Florida team did with Maelstrom. The ride closed in October, 2014, and "kind of" opened in June, 2016. I say "kind of" because it breaks down so much that it clearly wasn't ready to go when they opened it, and it's impossible to ride without a FP+. In California, they aren't closing Tower of Terror until January, and they will have the new ride ready to go in the summer. That's reasonable. There's no excuse for how painfully slow things move in WDW- they clearly intentionally drag out things here for budget and other financial reasons. TCD
Tri-Circle-D 2,059
The TCD Gang got to ride the new Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout ride in Disneyland last week. They did a great job with this. Of course, the ride system is the same, but they added a ton of theming to the ride, and a cool animatronic Rocket in the pre-show room. They added music and screens to the drop sequences, and they have several combinations that they can play (kind of like how they do in Star Tours), which makes each ride somewhat unique. We also got to ride the Halloween overlay, Monsters After Dark, twice on its opening night. They did a great job with that too. It's amazing that they are able to run the regular ride all day, then shut it down for an hour, and start the Halloween version for the remainder of the night. Very good planning and execution there. Spoiler Alert- there was no Howard the Duck cameo, but in the Halloween overlay, there was an appearance by Stan Lee! The ride is now way better than it was a just the plain old Tower of Terror. Travisma 1,317
Sounds like a great upgrade. If they were able to do it in FL I might even try the ride. On an off note, did you see that Stan Lee was going to be in Tampa for the Mega Con? STAN LEE, the creator of the X-MEN, SPIDER-MAN, and IRON MAN, returns to Florida to support hurricane Irma relieve efforts and provide a unique experience for his fans! Click here for more. MEGACON TAMPA BAY | SEP. 29- OCT. 1, 2017 I don't think Florida will get the Guardians of the Galaxy treatment at its Tower of Terror. I don't think it would fit in very well in the Florida location. I did see that Stan Lee is coming, but I'm too scared of the clientele at these Comic and Mega cons. TCD

After all they are going to Fruit and Nut Californify part of HS ! I guess there must not be a licensing issue with Guardians since they supposedly are changing Ellen into that, but I could see them not having 2 Guardian attractions. The new façade on the old Tower of Terror at California Adventure is very bright and gaudy. Since our TOT is kind of a focal point of the park, I just don't think it would look right sitting where it is in DHS. Somewhere, I remember reading that they were careful to theme and place the tower so it wouldn't clash with views from Epcot. But, I don't think views and clashing are as important to WDW as they used to be. I agree with you that I don't see them having two Guardians of the Galaxy attractions at WDW. Agreed it's unlikely that they'll theme 2 attractions with Guardians and they've confirmed the attraction at Epcot already. re: licensing issue Quote ...Under the current contract with Universal, Marvel characters that are not being used inside Islands of Adventure are allowed to be used east of the Mississippi in theme park attractions. http://www.themeparktourist.com/news/20160725/32082/things-you-probably-didn-t-realize-about-universal-s-marvel-contract
