Over nigth stop in SC on way to and from The Fort.

Recommended Posts

Looking for places that people have stayed at and liked.   Leaving from the Richmond VA area and hoping to get within 5 1/2 hours of for ( Leaving in afternoon).

Would like pull though that I don't have to unhook and easy access to and from freeway.   If anyone knows of safe place( Walmart, etc) to stop in that area would like to hear about that too.  Cracker barrel's don't usually don't have enough room. ( Ford Excursion with 36ft trailer, 55ft overall)

Any experience with Point South KOA, or Camp Lake Jasper?

We usually overnight at CB  in Walterboro on the way home.  Park parallel to the curb.  Nice, level lot.  Easy off and on 95.  Yes, we do hear the traffic from the interstate, but it doesn't bother us.  And we have a nice "front yard."

Jason,  Safe travel this weekend.  Will be wet and foggy coming through VA.

Gwen,   I looked at that Cracker Barrel.   With only one way in or out and size of the lot not sure It would be good idea for us.  Would be worried that if we showed and they were busy we would not have a place to park. But with it being the next exit from Walmart we may check it out.

We have looked into New Green Acres and a few others in the area.  We would like to get as far as we can the first night.   Will only be stopping to get some sleep then get back on road first thing.  So we aren't going to make any reservations.  Just going to hit the road and if we get to a point we want to stop and it is early we will call and see if we can get a site.  If it is late then we hit the closest Walmart.

If you want to go further, stop at Jacksonville North / St. Marys KOA. It is on the Georgia/Florida border. We drive it from northern Maryland. They have free pancakes and waffles for breakfast. My husband loves the pancakes and I love the waffles. They make the batter from scratch. Believe it or not, we drive there for the breakfast. The owners are great and you are personally escorted to you site, even at 10:00 at night.

I'm with Debbie about pushing on if you can-

If you can push on another 90 minutes or so the Florida Welcome Center is a great place to stop.  I have an F-250 with a 35' trailer and they have a great lot away form the traffic noise.

New Green Acres is in Walterboro. Nice stopover, long pull thrus and right off the highway. They also have after-hours check-in and I can't remember them ever being full-up.

We have stayed at both of these. Waltersboro is great for us if leaving late in the evening. If we leave mid day we like the KOA. We like the KOA due to it being closer making the second day part of the trip minimal.

Ditto, we have also used both many times with good results. They both have clean hot showers, both easy on and off, and are nice and quiet.

The best thing is that they both have after hours kiosks that list the open sites and let you sign in late and leave early if you like.

As noted above we haven't seen New Green Acres fill up completely but we have seen the KOA full when it's snowbird migration season   ;)

When that happened we just went up the road an exit or two to a Walmart lot IIRC.  But I sure did miss that hot shower during the next day's driving......

We probably won't leave Virginia until 2pm, so I am not sure that making it all the way to Florida Thursday night will be an option (with gas stops probably about 10-10.5 hours).  But If we can get on the road earlier I will look into St Marys or the Welcome Center.  Hoping not to get too tired before we get there.
