swimmarz 72
I am 2.5 hours south of the Fort, but I am looking into other campgrounds along the way, ya know if you go camping for a week, split it up, 2 days here 3 days at the fort and then 2 days somewhere else or split it 3 days and then 4 days at the fort I came across turtle beach in Sarasota- https://www.scgov.net/TurtleBeachCampground/Pages/default.aspxAnyone ever stayed there? I have stayed at Sun and Fun - http://www.carefreervresorts.com/rv-parks/florida/sun-n-fun/?gclid=CPXIvqDio8YCFRc8gQodm4IBRgits ok, not near a lot but the resort it good Happy Monday
Tri-Circle-D 2,059
Have you ever been to Fort Desoto in St. Pete? http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/camping.htm#fortd It's not quite as nice as Fort Wilderness, but it has a great beach and actually has a Fort to explore. twiceblessed....nacole 433
Okay... I can't help, but just wanted to jump in and say only 2.5 hours away... man, I would LOVE that drive :) Of course, we have it easier than several Fiends so, I guess I shouldn't complain with our tiny 9 hour drive Have fun on your trip!! Travisma 1,317
We're about an 1.25 hours from driveway to checkin. I would second Fort Desoto but that means you would be going over the Skyway Bridge. Hillsborough River State Park is nice. We haven't been there in years, but we saw some pictures and they've really improved it. Try this link https://www.floridastateparks.org/ It lists all the state parks and if they have camping. Alafia River State Park is SE of Tampa off of 301. Lots of nature there, they have hiking and bike trails. We went tubing at Rock Springs Run in Apopka a couple of weeks ago. Kelly Park adjoins it and has camping. It would be about 45 minutes N of WDW. I have a trip report listed with more information about it. There are supposed to be a few nice campgrounds over in the Cape Canaveral area.

Being from north of there, I didn't think about that. It would not be fun towing a trailer over that on a windy day. But people do it every day, I guess. TCD
Travisma 1,317
Hillsborough County has 3 parks with camping. http://fl-hillsboroughcounty.civicplus.com/Facilities/Facility/Details/7932 E.G.Simmons Regional Park is S of Tampa on Tampa Bay in Ruskin. Camping is $24 a night. Some sites have beach access. There is also Edward Meddard Park and Lithia Springs Park. They are both E of Tampa. We have stayed ate Meddard and Lithia, but it's been years since we've been there.

Travisma 1,317
Since you are coming up from Cape Coral, you should check out some of the campgrounds along Hwy 27. I used to go down 27 when we were visiting my daughter in Miramar. It was a lot nicer drive than fighting 75 and Alligator Alley, and only added about a 1/2 hour to the trip. I can't vouch for any of these, and it's been a few years since I've traveled down that way, so things might've changed. Fisheating Creek Outpost 7555 US-27Palmdale, FL 33944 There are some up around Haines city, but they have year rounders in them. There was one of the most pitiful looking campgrounds further S on 27 around Moore Haven. They leveled a field, divided it up, added power etc, some saplings, and called it a campground. Not a bit of shade. I just found it on Google Maps. It must be cheap, the satellite view shows the majority of the sites occupied, and it has great reviews. djsamuel 322
Highlands Hammock State Park, just off of Rt27 in Sebring is pretty nice. The trails are great. We spent a three days there a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it. Starting now through the summer, the bugs may be pretty bad though.

daddyphat808 - Eric 16
I am from Naples. And to be honest never camped around here or on the way. Always just wanted to get to the Fort. Fort Desoto sounds really cool but I would go way out of the way to not cross that bridge towing my trailer! There is a cool campground on Fort Myers beach where you camp right on the beach. Going to try that one one of these days. Also my kids loved Lion Country Safari and the KOA there. Not anything close to the Fort in quality but hearing the Lions roar in the mornings sure scared the poo out of our dog. http://www.lioncountrysafari.com/koa/koa-overview/ We have stayed a couple of times at the Larry and Penny Thompson park which is laid out in loops. We were there for a couple of DW's Triathlons. Cool thing about this place is the Miami Zoo and a Railroad museum is super close. http://www.miamidade.gov/parks/larry-penny.asp
