Help from some North Carolina Fiends

Recommended Posts

Advance is about 15 miles from us.  Unfortunately there's not much there to see or do.  Very tiny.

Boone's Cave is somewhere in the area, but it's not much to see either.

You can drive to Lexington for barbecue (be sure and eat at Lexington Barbecue -- there are a lot of places there, but this one has the best food).

Closest good source of fast food is Clemmons.  And a good family restaurant - Pete's.  Also the home of Tanglewood Park -- https://www.forsyth.cc/parks/tanglewood/ -- you could easily spend a whole day there.  Two golf courses, plus Par 3 and a couple of driving ranges.  Great pool. Lake with paddle boats, fishing, picnic areas, etc.  And a good place to ride bicycles.

Farmington has a drag strip.

Mocksville has a few fast food places.  Not much else there to do.

I can give you lots of suggestions for Winston-Salem.  Old Salem is a good place to visit.

DH wants to know if you've ever been to this TT.  It's rough.  Very hilly going down toward the Yadkin River.  There's no way we could get the moho in there.

How long will you be here?  What are the ages of your kids?  How much do you want to spend eating out?

Going out to help power wash the deck.  Will post more later.

Cook Out is a fast food burger/BBQ place all around the state.  They have 4 in Winston Salem.  They have good food at good prices and 40 flavors of milk shakes.

This looks like a fun place.

It's west on 421 from WS

If you like NASCAR, Michael Waltrip has a garage in Cornelius, not sure if it's open for tours.  My nephew lives in Cornelius and we've driven past the garage a few times

Cornelius is on Lake Norman.

Lake Norman

Lake Norman, created between 1959 and 1964 as part of the construction of the Cowans Ford Dam by Duke Energy.

It's the largest manmade body of fresh water located in North Carolina

Cheerwine soda is based in Salisbury NC.  They have a web page and FB page.  I don't know if they have a museum and or factory tour.

We have never been there and will be there for 5 nights, no kids that really travel anymore( they would rather borrow the camper) eating out more of the casual type places and for paying does not really matter to much if its good, I mean after all we have paid to eat at Disney :rofl2: . We have a 39' 5th wheel towed with a full size tractor and I have been in some tight places camping already. Thanks for the info.

Okay.  Will get back to you with a list of suggestions.

With just the two of you, I wouldn't go to Tweetsie.  It would take you about 1.5 hours each way, and it's more for little kids.  But Blowing Rock/Boone areas do have some interesting areas to explore. Also the Blue Ridge Parkway is nearby.

If you like museums Winston-Salem has Old Salem, the Reynolda House and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. We like the Village tavern in Reynolda Village and usually stop there for a quick bite when visiting Reynolda House.

You won't be that far from Spencer which is where the NC Transportaion Museum resides. It is mostly trains and has the largest working roundhouse turntable but includes some cars, trucks and planes. Salisbury is close by and has a number of local and chain sit down restaurants. We like Mambo Grill & Tapas in Salisbury and Hendrix BBQ in Spencer.

A word of warning about many NC BBQ joints. First is many are cash only. Second is many are only open for lunch and no weekend hours are common. So if there is a place you want to try verify their hours before going. Hendrix BBW mentioned above is one of these cash only places.

Definitely Old Salem if you like history or it's just a nice place to walk around. NC Zoo in Asheboro (southeast of W-S; not the same as Asheville) is nice if you like zoos. It's big (or at least was, we haven't been in about 5 years).  NC Transportation museum in Spencer if you like trains. NASCAR museum in Charlotte if you  like NASCAR. Tweetsie RR is for young kids. Boone/Blowing Rock/Banner Elk area has lots of nice outdoor areas -- Grandfather Mtn., Blue Ridge Parkway. Can't really help with food. We have friends who live near Winston-Salem and we eat at their house when we go to that area.

Ok so the transportation museum sounds good for and the zoo is good for the wife, BBQ good for both. When we travel we have a rule that we do not eat in any restaurants we can at home, if it is a chain style one as long as they are not in our area fine, we love Steak & Shake, and we always ask the locals where they eat. Thanks for all the info.

IMHO the other Village Tavern location is much better than the one at Reynolda Village.  It's at the Corner of Stratford Rd and Hanes Mall Blvd.  Here's the menu:  http://www.villagetavern.com/menu.cfm

Another great local place to eat in Winston-Salem (for lunch or dinner) is the Carriage House on Stratford Road.  Menu and info here:  http://www.thecarriagehouserestaurant.com/

If you're visiting Old Salem, you can eat at the Tavern, which features dishes inspired by 1800s Moravian settlers.  http://thetaverninoldsalem.ws/

A consistently good (not great, not amazing, but just has something that appeals to everyone) local chain is Cagney's Kitchen.  The original Cagney's is at 2201 Cloverdale Ave Winston-Salem, NC 27113.  It's right across the street from Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, which is right off business 40.

Aside from some local chain restaurants, Cagney's is our favorite breakfast destination.   We also enjoy lunch and dinner there.

Here's their website:  http://www.dinecagneys.com/

Sorry about the bolding.  I cut/pasted their address, and now I can't turn the bold off.

We rarely get over to the mall area anymore when we in around Winston-Salem but will see if we can head that way to try the other Village Tavern location.
