Did I Miss 60B? An AC in A2 Trip Report

Have any of you ever been to Elizabethtown, Kentucky?

If not, have any of you ever seen the movie "Elizabethtown" starring Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst?

If the answer to both of those is no, then you need to pay attention. The movie is really good. I know what the male fiends amongst you will say. "That's a chick flick."

Well.

You're right.

It is a chick flick, but it is also a very good movie.

DW and I quote this movie all the time.

And when we found out we would be going to Elizabethtown for DS's baseball tournament, the quotes really started flying.

We will get started shortly but I will leave you with these to get things going:

So, we were headed south on 4-17-15 (Friday) to Elizabethtown for DS's baseball tournament.  We lucked out and our first scheduled game was not until Saturday morning.  Therefore we had some time to take care of some other business.

We met another baseball family near our house at 0700 on Friday morning and pointed ourselves south.

We had plans to stop in Louisville on the way.  Of course we crossed the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Kentucky and we waved to Dave and Linda while driving through.  We also made our customary jokes about Big Bonelick State Park and I wished for a moment that we could just keep driving south until we got here:

Alas, we were not going to be able to continue south but we did have a cool destination in mind for the trip down.

Here we are on the outskirts of Lou-a vull:

The river is muddy and swollen:

You can see this little river walk area near the arena is under water:

We were stuck in traffic for a bit, since we were getting off the highway right next to the KFC Yum Arena, where the Louisville Cardinals play basketball.  There was a huge Kenny Chesney concert there that night and there was a ton of traffic and moving around of tour buses, emergency vehicles, etc that caused long waits.

Finally we parked downtown and started walking to our destination:

My wife pointed this out across the street:

We went inside and bought our tickets for the museum and factory tour:

The factory tour will be on tap first.  We were not allowed to take pics inside the factory so I will post a short video links for you to watch:

The factory tour was outstanding!  Even people who are not big baseball fans would enjoy it.  Up next we will take a look inside the museum.

I've been to Elizabethtown and Louisville. Does that give me a pass on the movie?

My folks lived in Bardstown up until my Dad passed away and we used to go over that area of Ky. fairly often to visit.

I'm in!

Glad you're here!

Popcorn is popped.

Are the cinnamon rolls baked?

Did you put some butter on it for me?

He better have.

I'm in.

Yes.

Yes you are.

I have never heard of not been to Elizabethtown.

But, I'm still in.

TCD

You're forgiven.

Never heard of the movie, will add that to my library list!

I bet you will like it.

Sure.  I mean, it's not a requirement or anything.  I just thought it would be a good aside to discuss with this TR.

It is a nice area.

I wanted to go further east and see if we could find Raylan and Boyd:

But I was outvoted.

We just finished doing a factory tour where we watched a demonstration on how they used to make bats before automation.  Then we watched them while they made bats for everyone's favorite cheater:

It was cool to watch the process.

At the end of the tour they gave everyone a small souvenir bat:

Afterward we perused the museum:

DS went straight to this:

Then he looked at a display that showed how the tree transforms into the splits for bats:

IMG_3828_zps3le1gaot.jpg

He turned the other way and saw a gentlemen holding a bat and getting his picture taken.  We wandered that way and saw that you could hold several players bats and get your picture taken......my son being the intelligent individual he is decided to pick one that belonged to a deceased legend.

Here he is putting on the required gloves before handling:

And now with a bat that was used by Mickey Mantle:

Of course daddy had to get in on the action:

I chose Cal Ripken Jr's bat.  After all, our dog is named after him.

I wish I had known....you were only 3 hours up the road from me.  I could have come up and taken you to my favorite Louisville restaurant.  Well, in reality, as DD's prom was Saturday, I probably couldn't have regardless.  But it would have been fun!

There may be a future trip or two.  It was a great place to play baseball.

Your son's batter's stance is way better than yours.

No offense.

TCD

I knew someone would say that! He was definitely more into it than me, but he knows where he learned his stance LOL.

He is a serious player. Guess what he did last night when we got home? Hit baseballs.

Guess what he did this morning before school? Hit baseballs.

Guess what he wants to do after school?
