BIG Summer trip planning looking for help

Ok so our summer trip this year looks like it will take us from Newark De to Taos New Mexico ( son lives there) anyway looking to head right out I 70 to Colorado then head south. Need help on places to stop and things to see along the way. Also thinking of coming back thru the top of Texas, Ok and hit a rv rally in Nashville Tn, so help along that way would also be good. Even better would be getting to maybe meet a Fiend or two along the way.

We will be traveling in a 39' 5th wheel so needing campgrounds to fit big rigs is needed, thanks again for any help and info we receive.

We're not in that area of the country (so I can't really help) but I wanted to jump in and say, have a great trip!!  My husband and I met, while we were both living in Denver... we love that part of the country and would move back if God opened the doors.  It's so pretty there.  Of course, I grew up on an island in the Pacific NW so... didn't have it too shabby there either

Oklahoma City has a great science/kids museum complex.  Also the Cowboy Museum

 

Norman OK is the home of the Sooners if you are into college football.

 

Colorado Springs has the Garden of the Gods Park and Pikes Peak (don't think you would want to drive the 5ver up that!)  You could take the Cog Railroad up.

 

Thats about all my knowledge of those areas.

It is still in the thoughts but getting the major plans and figuring out dates and travel times first. Brandan wants to do Christmas again this year so trying to figure that out also. Keeping both boys happy is not easy.

Taos. Take a ride around the ring of fire. It's beautiful.

Amarillo Texas. Stop by the Grand Canyon of Texas. Eat at the Bog Texan. Home of the "free 72 oz steak". If you eat it all. Also visit the American quarter horse museum.

Oklahoma. Now your in my neck of the woods

Coming from Amarillo. Stop at the Stafford air & space museum in weatherford oklahoma.

The Route 66 museum.

On okc go to the Okc bombing memorial and museum. It's very moving.

National cowboy hall of fame.

Downtown Okc & Brick town (it's similar to the San Antonio river walk)

The Okc zoo & botanical gardens is gorgeous. And lots of animals.

Omniplex science museum.

Head east and if we are at the lake stop by and I'll take y'all our on the houseboat for some cruising and swimming. Lake tenkiller

Ft Smith arkansas. Stop by and vist the Fort and learn about the real hanging judge. Surprisingly he was against the death penalty.

Little rock arkansas. Clinton presidential library and massage parlor. (Lol. Let's see who gets that joke).

Memphis tenn. Graceland. Have lunch on Bealle street (spelling). Graceland. Has a rv campground you can stay at.

Then head east to Nashville and say hi to Daveintn

Thanks Ray I was hoping you would chime in here. From New Mexico it looks like Rt 40 right into Nashville so looking for things and stops along there also. How close will we get to where you are, would love to meet up, and thanks already for the boating offer that sounds nice. Now waiting for Dave in Tn to jump in next and maybe and get lucky to ge near them also. Looks like I will get to meet up with Helmsey...Todd in April on a trip near Knoxville. Thanks again for any help on ideas keep them coming.

I've never been to that park but I pass by it every once in a while, sort of.

It's actually about a 20-30 minutes drive off of I-40. With turnpikes involved. I would say that wouldn't be my first choice just based on location and distance from I-40. But next time I'm down in that area I'll go by and check it out.

There's a great KOA. Just east of OKC. IIRC it's called Oklahoma City East.

Super nice folks own it and several pull thrus. Swimming pool, etc.

I'm not sure what your looking for but there are tons of trucks stops that always have rv's at them. Also. We have more casinos than Las Vegas. Lol. Some casinos even have RV hook ups.

I live 30 miles straight north of the intersection of I-40 & I-44. But we have a place at lake tenkiller which is I'm the eastern part of the state. You just let me know when your coming thru and I'll come to you if need be.

Our place is at www.finandfeatherresort.com. Think of the movie Dirty Dancing and you'll get the picture of what the resorts like. They have some RV sites, water, sewer, and 30amp service. It's a great place and the owners are Fort Wilderness regulars. I wouldn't be surprise if they're reading this thread. Lol. $25-$30/ night. There's also a campground right on the lake, I'll have to get the info for you if that's something you might be interested in. It's located at Strayhorn Marina.

Ray, great info, right now it's all in the planning stages, we pretty much have the trip out to New Mexico figured out. Where to stay and things to see, now working on the N.M. to Nashville leg, so any help there is great, once we figure out how long we are staying near our son it will help where & what we do on that leg. The whole trip should be over 11 weeks and total  drive time near 70 hours. Not to worried how far off the interstates we will camp if we are there a few day, one night stops would be nice close to the highway

If you are in no rush to get to your destination on the way out there is Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park north of Denver or Garden of the Gods south of it. If your into historical stuff there is Arrow Rock, Mo about a 100 miles east of Kansas City, Mo.

 

On your way back if you take I-65 out of Nashville you have Mammoth Cave National Park in Ky. They have a lot of different cave tours. Lincoln's birthplace and childhood home are also off I-65.  As you continue north you will be very near Bourbon country around Bardstown, Ky. Besides the distilleries there is a Bourbon museum and My Old Kentucky Home State Park which has the mansion that Stephan Foster wrote the song about. We always liked to take the Bluegrass Parkway across the state when visiting my parents as it is all freeway without the traffic of the interstates. Although we never went there, there is the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill Museum south of the Bluegrass Pky.

Actually I have a 8:00 am appointment in Tuttle Ok and then I have a 9:30 am appt in Norman. And between the two is the campground Rennie wants info on.

What do you like to do? Museums, sightseeing, casinos? Norman has it all.

Will you have a car?

Do you want fine dining or BBQ? Diner? Etc?

How many days will you be there?

Ok got it.

First of all I'm PMing you my phone number. If you need anything please feel free to call. And give it to your DD if she needs anything. I live about an hour north of Norman.

As I'm site you know Norman is a big college town and there is a lot to do there. We go there for football games every year.

Y'all might want to check out Campus Corner. As the name implies it's by the campus. Lots of shops, restaurants, and yes bars.

During the summer months she can go to lake thunderbird state park. Great for swimming and boating.

The Sam Noble oklahoma natural history museum is pretty cool as well as the Fred Jones Jr Museum of Art. There's also the Tribes Native American Art Museum as well as the National Weather Center.

Places to eat.

BBQ. Van's Pig Stand or Billy Sim' BBQ

Diner. The Diner. ( downtown on Main St)

Casual dining. The Mont ( great patio on nice days). LaBaguette (French cage and bakery).

I would also recommend y'all drive 20 minutes north to Downtown OKC and visit the Okc Bombing Memorial. As well as Bricktown And if you like basketball catch the Okc Thunder playing at the Cheasepeake Arena.

That should keep y'all busy for a while. Lol.

I just left A-AAA RV Park.

In the plus column it's clean and far enough off the turnpike you can't hear the traffic.

The sign says "A-AAA Adult Park" but I did see a kid walking two dogs.

There were a lot of permanent guests and a lot of long term guests.

Didn't see any playground area or swimming pool.

Didn't see any recreational facilities at all.

Looks like a good place for a quick overnight stay but it's quite always south of I-40.

I'll post some pix this evening when I get home.

I know B supports the E-3 at Tinker AFB. But that's in Midwest City. Are they opening an office in Normam?
