BradyBzLyn...Mo 2,023
A friend of mine brought me a huge bag of green tomatoes, and I'm trying to figure out what to do with them. I'll be frying some (of course), but I need some other yummy suggestions.
DaveInTN 3,247
Frying them is enough. It doesn't matter how many green tomatoes you have....you can eat them all if fried right. If you do want to do something else....what about a green tomato salsa?
Roller ... aka Ed 351
I agree with Dave - frying them is all you need to do. I can make a meal out of Fried Green Tomatoes. If you decide to go with the green tomato salsa idea, throw in some tomatillos. Serrano peppers are a good addition if you like a little kick in your salsa. Better flavor than jalapenos.
BradyBzLyn...Mo 2,023
Ooh... salsa is a great idea. I'll definitely be frying some, but she brought me close to 10 lbs and there are only 2 of us. ...and I need to fit in my vacation pants in 2 weeks.
Roller ... aka Ed 351
Sounds a little strange, but you can make a green marinara sauce. You need to stew the green tomatoes for a while to soften them and the run them through a blender or food processor to get the consistency of sauce you desire. Add a little sugar if the sauce is too tart. Fresh herbs really helps bring out the tomato flavor. Needs more time simmering than ripe tomatoes to break down the green tomatoes. DramaMama .......... Janet 75
My MIL found this recipe a few years ago. It is tasty and can be made much healthier than fried green tomatoes. I used reduced fat cheese and butter. Still... I would rather have them fried..... http://www.food.com/recipe/green-tomato-casserole-186562 Green Tomato CasseroleBy Redallnite on September 18, 200614 Reviews Ingredients4 medium green tomatoes, sliced thin1 teaspoon sugar1 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon pepper2 cups soft breadcrumbs1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese1 tablespoon butter, soften DirectionsArrange one layer of tomatoes in the bottom of 1 ½ quart casserole. CampMImi 22
My favorite restaurant serves pickled green tomatoes on their coleslaw to accompany their pulled pork BBQ sandwich.
