50 Years, 9 Nights, 5 Beds and 1 Big Fat Mistake

Recommended Posts

When we sailed on the Jewel of the Seas we opted to get the family ocean view suite instead of 2 rooms. The day we were disembarking we got to see one of the regular rooms. We were so glad we had chosen the room we did. It was huge! Having only one bathroom was not an issue for us.

OK, I broke my no trip report rule and read this one SO FAR. The picture count better ramp up or I am going back to my rule.   I have had a sun pass for a few yrs and it is great although I usually on

Toll booths SMB. If you don't have Ez pass and are driving to the shore you are crazy. The high speed ez pass lanes are sweet.

Andrew, are you trying to get me to read one of your TR's?       sent from that black box sitting on my desk using my fingers on the typing thingy

Loving all the pictures of your ladies!

No sail away party? I know ours wasn't up to Disney, but there was music, characters, etc. I guess that was because of the older ship?

You're kind of making me scared of anything under Freedom class.

Can you believe we never gambled a dollar? Usually around a casino, we'll at least risk a little. We were having too much fun elsewhere, I guess.

I'll say it again. You are one lucky man. What a beautiful family you have.

Dinner looked great.

No sail away party! That's strange. I don think I've been on a ship that doesn't have one.

Casino. That's what I love about DCL. It doesn't have one. And that's what makes a DCL about the same price as a carnival cruise.

Love the Anna pics at the pool!

Dave, I've sailed 10+ times on RCCL on at least 7 different ships, 3 of which were 10 or more years older than the Enchantment.  I have never boarded any of their ships into a hallway.  It's always the atrium (called the Centrum on RCCL ships) with live music.  And in your pictures the Enchantment Centrum looks gaudy.  Nothing like what the other RCCL ships look like!

Here's the Centrum on the Sovereign of the Seas, which was launched in January 1988 and was the largest ship in the world at that time:

Kelly, don't be scared.  I've sailed on the Nordic Empress, Sovereign of the Seas, Majesty of the Seas, Monarch of the Seas (most of these are no longer in service with RCCL), the Navigator, Mariner, and Adventure.  All of them had nice sailaway parties.

I was starting to get a little nervous with your review so far as well. But then it hit me, you're comparing it to your disney cruise. Disney is exceptional, no doubt about it.

It reminds me of the time we took our girls to Hershey Park. They were used to our Disney trips, staying in DVC villas. We entered our hotel room (just a small, local hotel, clean, perfectly fine), and one of them said "What IS this place??" (Not in a good way).

Bottom line, Disney spoils us!

Fortunately we didn't have to deal with one bathroom, as we were split over a couple of cabins.

Dinner looks yummy, and the atrium was pretty!

Dinner WAS yummy.  We enjoyed sitting in the atrium before dinner each evening listening to the entertainment.

I never said there was NO sail away party.  I said there wasn't MUCH of a party.  But, it doesn't sound like it was as nice as yours....It wasn't anything we were interested in spending much time with.

Like my comment to Kelly above, it's not that there was NO party.  My wording must have been confusing.  But in our opinion it wasn't much of a party.  And the ship's horn didn't play classic Disney tunes.   :rofl3:

In the picture after the MIL photobomb, is that your twin brother looking at the camera?

Blue shirt

Khaki pants/shorts

Short hair.

Glasses.

That's INC's oldest brother.

I didn't find our atrium to be gaudy....a bit dated for sure, but it was a pleasant place to sit.

I guess I'm wrong about the sail away party.  It must have been awesome.... I just drank so much that I blacked out.

Yep!  I have talked with people including Jason about how taking our first cruise on DCL was a mistake.  But don't despair....this trip report isn't nearly over yet.

My experience was the opposite of yours.  I took an extremely low budget cruise first.

My first and only cruise was on the Dolphin IV, which was built in 1956.  My cruise was in November 1999 and the ship was deemed not sea worthy in early 2000.  There were extension cords running down the hallways.  I don't recall any kind of sail away party.

Having set the bar so low, I know if I ever take another cruise, it will blow my socks off!

At least you weren't on the Dolphin III.

Excellent update.

So, it's not the Dream.  You knew that going in.  I am still thinking that y'all ended up having a blast.

I can't wait to hear about the bungee jumping.

Congratulations on the weight loss.  Good for you!

TCD

You're right.  I didn't expect the Dream.  And I didn't pay DCL prices, either.  But did we have a blast?  I'll get to that eventually.

Pics or it didn't happen.

Wait.

Nevermind.

TCD

Yeah, please don't go there. I bet Dave WOULD take a pic.

Who, me?

Damn That Dream

But....the cabin was clean.  And there was plenty of storage.  And there were enough beds, which ultimately turned out to be incredibly comfortable.  The bathroom was small, but functional.  So all was not lost.  Would we continue to find negative comparisons and conclude that this was a mistake, or would the Enhancement of the Seas eventually win us over??  We'll get to that later.

Sounds like an RV to me...

OK, I broke my no trip report rule and read this one SO FAR. The picture count better ramp up or I am going back to my rule.

I have had a sun pass for a few yrs and it is great although I usually only use it for the turnpike.

I lived in NJ for 38 yrs and it always seemed that the toll roads and bridges that you had to pay extra to ride on were the worst of all the roads, maybe the road fix it guys didn't have enough money to get thru the toll booths.

Dave, your dad looks great, he looks that good because he never had to use those darn phones you whippersnappers use nowadays. Oh and the ship (keeping with the theme) sailed already on the looking that good at 80.

Keep it coming but lets get those pictures going before I get too bored.

I wish Bob would comment on more TR's.

This comment was gold.

And got a rare up arrow from TCD!
