  1. Fantawild Group

    +42.7%

    13.1m

Fantawild Group must have opened or acquired a new park late in the year the previous year to have that big of a jump.

How are these attendance figures gathered?

Do the theme parks report them?  What's to stop them from fudging?

TCD

There's nothing in the report itself that explains how the figures are reported.

TEA appears to be a membership-based industry organization and a quick peek at their member directory turns up lots of Disney people.  So it would appear the figures are coming directly from Disney, but no idea how they're submitted, by whom, or what they're required to provide as proof... or if it's strictly honor system.

re: Fantawild

Fantawild is number 9 on the Top 10 worldwide operators list after opening three new properties between 2012-2013, yet none of its facilities appear on the top-attended lists. This is due to their focusing on smaller parks in second- and third-tier cities. The individual properties are not massive scale, but they add up significantly.

A few other interesting notes...

re: trends specific to attractions

We’re seeing a new level of attention being paid to intellectual properties and international brands in our attractions. Many of the most successful new rides and shows are themed around popular media products, in addition to which many of the global media companies are actively pursuing major projects around the world. Notable examples are Fox’s new project in Malaysia, Warner Bros. in Abu Dhabi, and plans at Dreamworks for attractions based on their popular animated features. And then of course Disney and Universal continue to expand.

I think a final trend to keep an eye on is the transformation of theme parks into destination resorts by the addition of themed hotels, second and third gates, and retail, dining, and entertainment developments. This has a profound impact on the economics of these attractions. Europa Park is a great example of this transformation.

re: guest spending

most operators are aiming to increase in-park spending by visitors by increasing the sale of pre-paid packages and through the use of innovative technologies that alter visitors’ psychology and subsequent spending patterns —Disney’s MyMagic+ is the most visible example. As visitors increasingly make their largest payment before they arrive and have less need for historic forms of payment (i.e., cash, credit cards), per capita revenues should increase.

  • 11 months later...

The Themed Entertainment Association (http://www.TEAconnect.org) 2014 report on Theme Park Attendance is now out.

Highlights...

Disney parks still lead by a wide margin with attendance of 134m for all parks in 2014

Over the prior year...

Disney parks are up 1/3%

Universal parks are up 10.4%

Six Flags, Cedar Fair and SeaWorld are all down

Top 4 individual parks worldwide are the same as last year.  The big jump is Universal Studios Japan, which moved from 9th place to 5th, ahead of Epcot. Disneyland Paris dropped from 6th to 9th and is the only park in the top 12 whose attendance dropped last year (-4.7%). Universal Studios FL moved ahead of Disney's CA Adventure with attendance up 17%.

No change in the rankings of North American parks.  In Europe the news for continues to be bad for Disney with Walt Disney Studios in Paris dropping from 3rd to 5th with attendance down 4.7%.
