Sometimes, I feel it necessary to be the voice of Larry on this board. You can't determine anything re. Towing capacity until you know the type of tires, date of manufacture of the suspension, cold cranking amps of the battery, number of cup holders and whether or not any passengers are smokers and will be using the ash trays. Take the weight of your youngest child, divide it by the number of natural teeth in all passengers mouths, and factor in the ambient temperature reading for Belize. This will give you the actual tow rating of the vehicle provided the tires are inflated to just over 3.14159 lbs of the maximum inflation rating for range D TR tires. Now top off the windshield washer reservoir and generously lube the ball with white lithium grease. Bitch out your wife, confine your little dogs to the trailer and go away for the day while your dogs yap away and disturb the neighbors. You are now good to go, IMHO.

I have owned 2 VWs and would never own a third. They are expensive to fix, impossible to even change a headlight yourself, over engineered and, worse yet, many are now made in Mexico where quality is anything but job one. Plagued with electrical problems. Run like the wind.

Jim, that's absurd.  

 

You failed to account for the capacity of the freezer bags.  If your meals are sealed in 2L bags, you have to divide the tongue weight by 6.43 before factoring in the drag coefficient.  If you primarily use 4L bags, divide by 6.41.

I'm assuming you are using zip locks, otherwise your calculations are off by a factor of 5.

I have heard in general that they are a money pit... maybe later are better, but I'd be very wary about it because it carries the VW badge.

 

My philosophy on tow vehicles is that you should pick a high volume seller to use.

It's funny you should mention headlights.....  that was our first indication of what we were in for.  Went to get it inspected, highbeam bulb out, ok take it to our local garage, he calls and says he has "bad news".....  Can't replace just the bulb, you need to replace the entire headlight assembly since it is sealed.  OK..... take it to VW garage (NOT dealer too expensive)  he gets a USED one off Ebay for 700 dollars, YES  SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS for a USED headlamp assembly.  Turns out it has motors and sensors and computer chips all permanently sealed inside somehow.    We should have gotten rid of it right then, but it took several even more expensive lessons until we finally traded it towards a nice Jeep  :)
