Hi Rennie,

Until this past summer, I lived about 20 min. from St. Augustine and have stayed at several of the campgrounds there in recent years.  My mom still lives there and takes her RV out to local campgrounds from time to time.

Anastasia is beautiful.  Right next to the beach and many of the attractions in St. Aug.  Can't beat the location.  But, it is a state park and only a few of the sites have sewer.  Also, unless you get in the Coquina loop, the canopy is low in most of the other RV sites and can be an issue for larger units.  Our friend has a 5th wheel similar in size to yours and would not stay there unless he could get into Coquina.

Our favorite was North Beach Campground, located on A1A just north of St. Augustine.  It is situated between the ocean and the intracoastal waterway, so you can watch the sun come up and set over water each day.  Walk to the beach or walk to the pier and fish.  The beach is not crowded and at night it is very peaceful there (as long as it's not a holiday weekend).  You can hear the waves crashing from your site.  There are some great places to eat within walking distance, one restaurant at the back of the CG that is right on the water, and an oceanfront place across the street.  It's nice because if you spend the day in town with all the tourists, you can retreat to the quiet, off the beaten path place after.  It is not far from "the action", but far enough to escape it.

It took me a few stays there to warm up to the place.  At first I didn't like it.  But after trying out others in the area, we came back to this one and it wound up being our top pick.  I posted pictures and wrote a brief review here in 2012, but since then they have made some improvements to the place.  The only thing you cannot get around is the sand/dirt.  If you absolutely hate that, this is not the place for you.  You can see what I (and some others) wrote here:  http://www.fortfiends.net/forum/topic/6383-north-beach-camp-resort-st-augustine-fl/

Thanks all so far for ideas, I think the state park looks best if we plan it early enough. North Beach Campground also looks nice but pricey so do others in the area but I guess that should be expected. Keep the tips coming all is welcome.

Fortparty of 4, check out the Easter Grand Gathering at Gettysburg, they have rental cabins also just not close to where we camp, love to have some new faces there again this year.

Rennie-

I don't have a campground recommendation, but I do have a couple of recommendations on some sights to see, and a restaurant that we really enjoyed on one of our visits.

First, make some time to visit the lighthouse: http://www.staugustinelighthouse.com/  You can climb up it an see everything, and there's a great museum there which is really informative.

Next, tour the Fort:  http://www.nps.gov/casa/index.htm  It is operated by the National Parks Service.  Again, very informative and interesting.

If you want to go total tourist, visit the alleged site of the Fountain of Youth- http://www.fountainofyouthflorida.com/  They even let you drink some of the nasty water.  Spoiler alert- it didn't do me a bit of good.

Within walking distance of the Fort is the old city- a classic tourist trap, but still worth a walking tour.

At night, there a bunch of companies offering Ghost Tours- these are fun, and not very scary.

A unique restaurant that my kids still talk about years after we visited it is the Santa Maria Restaurant- it is also walking distance from the Fort and old city, and is built out on a pier over the water.  Their claim to fame is that they have little trap doors on the tables which you can use to drop food down to the fish swimming below:  http://www.santamariarestaurant.com/  It is a bit of a dump, but to me, that's part of its charm.  We had a great time there dropping not only the food they give you to feed the fish, but other stuff from our plates through the trap doors.  Gross.  Disgusting.  But totally memorable.

St. Augustine is great city to visit.

I saw that.  Unfortunately we cannot make it.  That is my kids' spring break and we already had plans.  As it is, the district has shortened it by a day because of the snow days they've had.  If anything changes, I will be there if I can!

North Beach is a bit more but has better amenities than the state park and it is actually easier to get to the beach than Anastasia.  Both CG's have the dirt/sand issue.  Anastasia books up fast so if that is your choice, better get a reservation.

All excellent suggestions!  I would add:  The Cathedral Basilica and the Alligator Farm.  Kids can do a zip line course over the gators!  For eating, The Columbian, and The Conch House (also on the water).

Very much agree.

We went on a Nights of Lights trolley tour when we were there visiting grandparents this past Christmas.  It's so funny, when we lived there we never did that unless we had company in town.  Now we are the tourists!  Love it there.

The Alligator Farm!

I agree!

We went there- somewhere I have a photo of the twins holding a real (baby) alligator.  That's another tourist trap, but it wasn't expensive, and it was memorable.  I don't remember the zip line-maybe that's new.

Ok after all the good info and seeing we want to sightsee while we are here we booked at Anastasia State Park, went economical and figured we really do not need all the amenities, we will just save all that for when we get to the Fort.  Thanks again for all your help.
