FortWildernessFan 10
Merry Christmas to the family with a gift for ourselves. We finally traded our camper. Our 1999 Forest River Sierra 39' Travel Trailer with 2 slides for a 2001 Forest River Palomino 25' Fifth Wheel with 1 slide and $750. The new camper is 14 feet shorter, 4,835 lbs lighter, 2 years newer and hardly been used. Now I need to weld on a hitch to the rear so we can pull our little trailer with the golf cart. With the kids grown , except Geena, we just didn't need the huge unit anymore. Now with the fuel savings we can go to the Fort more often. We have our test run to the Fort February 15-22, 2014! Can't wait! Old Camper New Camper

Roller ... aka Ed 351
You mentioned that you plan on triple towing (towing two trailers). You need to check the state laws on that before you get too involved, because there are states that do not allow it - or have limitations on it. GA and FL do NOT allow it, btw. Some sites to check:http://towingworld.com/towinglaws.cfmhttp://rv-roadtrips.thefuntimesguide.com/2009/07/triple_towing.phphttp://www.woodalls.com/articledetails.aspx?articleID=1195129

But we have no other way to get our golf cart down to the Fort. If I get pulled over I can show them my Class A CDL with Doubles Endorsement, LOL. I am not sure but the reason we can haul them commercially is because the law applies to actual "Ball hitches" A fifth wheel uses a King Pin and have a lot higher rating than a "ball". I am looking into it further though. Thanks for the heads up.

I am looking into it further though. Thanks for the heads up. Commercial has air brakes on all the vehicles that should apply brakes equally on all the vehicles - most private triple tows have hydraulic; electric and none which rarely apply brakes equally ... usually. Pin boxes and most fifth wheel hitches in private vehicles are rarely rated as high as the hitches on a commercial vehicle/trailer. Another factor - the Feds get involved with Commercial Vehicles on Interstate Highways ...
ImDownWithDisney 342
You probably won't get stopped towing double, but if you encounter a Barney Fyffe type be prepared to drop your trailer at the nearest weigh station.

FortWildernessFan 10
Okay, I just got off the phone with GA Department of Public Safety. Recreational double towing is allowed as long as the following conditions are met.First towed trailer must be a fifth wheel or gooseneck hitch rated to handle the total of both trailers. Traditional bumper style towing of doubles is not allowed. The first trailer must have hydraulic or electric brakes on all axles. The second trailer must have brakes if the weight of it exceeds 1500 lbs. Both trailers must have lighting that meets DOT standards. Total combined trailer length cannot exceed 60 feet. Total weight cannot exceed GCWR of tow vehicle. Speed is limited to 65 mph.I tried calling FL DOT but have not spoken to anybody who knows yet.
