Second, I think the buzzard thing is pretty cool!  Thanks to Kelly for sharing that tidbit.  Here is the buzzard from the new ride.

 

 

And here is a pic I took of the buzzards in Oct 2010 from the Scary Ho ride.

 

 

Pretty neat....and I bet I never would have noticed such a detail.

I will have to agree with you. I believe that their actual name is turkey vulture. But in some parts of the country they are known as buzzards.

However there is also a bird named the common buzzard but it looks more like a hawk to me.

 

Looks like you and Gwen are right- they're vultures.

That one-day trip was too short for a TR, so I figured I would save the photos for bonus content.

 

They are gross. My parents love them.

 

I remember going to the movies with my parents as a kid, and them liking Good and Plenty too.  As far as I know, neither has ever been to Iran, though.

We still need a little Christmas, so on with the report.

 

We are back to Saturday night, December 14.  We had bailed out of Hollywood Studios when a rain storm suddenly hit.

 

By the time we got back to the Fort, the rain had stopped, and things were wet.

 

We ended up watching the Heisman Trophy presentation from the camper. They kept showing that it was snowing in NYC that night.  We had just enjoyed an 80 degree mostly sunny day.  So what if we got a little rain?

 

After the show, we did a little looping, and got to see Castle Dave's show:

 

 

I wanted to video the whole show so I could share it in this TR, but the twins didn't want to wait around for me to do that.  Luckily, some new Fiends who go by the name Lightbikes taped it and posted it on YouTube, so here you go:

If you've never seen this in person, you need to find a way to the Fort in early December one year.

 

The MK was open until 1 am, and we knew we wanted to head over there mainly to enjoy the Dreamlights, so we headed over sometime after 11.

 

As we headed in, a man who rode the boat over with us introduced himself as CortezCapt from Fortfiends.  Nice to meet you, CC!

 

Once in the MK, we did enjoy the decorations.  Especially the Dreamlights:

If you've ever owned a pop-up camper, you know that having to pack up a camper with wet canvas is no fun at all.  I was kind of bummed about the rain earlier on Saturday evening, but I hoped that if  there was no more rain, and we had a sunny morning on Sunday, the canvas might be dry when it came time to crank 'er down.

 

No such luck.  Around 4 am, I awoke to hear very hard rain beating down on us.  It continued to rain for a couple of hours, and didn't let up until around 7.

 

No chance of the canvas being dry now.

 

Oh well, I was due.  We've been real lucky to not have any rain on our last few camping trips.

 

I wasn't sure the rain had stopped for good when I headed out for my morning rounds.

 

Here's a wet road as I headed out of the 1400 loop on Sunday morning:

I'm not sure if you can see it, but there's a post sticking out of the ground here just to the right of the tree trunks you see in this photo.  Someday, someone will find it and wonder what it's doing there.  By then, nobody will remember that this post, and some others in the area, used to hold props for the Haunted Carriage Rides that they used to have back here every year in October.  They haven't had the Haunted Carriage Rides for the past two years, though, and probably won't be using these posts anymore:

It was pretty quiet around the Settlement this morning.  And wet:

 

 

Since things seemed pretty quiet this morning, I decided I ought to go ahead and check on the progress of the Four Seasons.  It's been two years since they broke ground on that project.  Surely, they must be near done.

It's still Sunday morning, December 15, 2013, but now we're at the other end of the Fort.

 

Out here, at the dog walk area behind the 1800 loop:

 

 

The 1600 loop is that way down the canal, and the 1500 is after that.  But we're not going that way:

 

 

Nope, we're heading the other way.  Past this tent set up behind a site on the 1800 loop.  I think this would be a cool place to sleep in a tent:

 

 

You only need take a few steps past the last site on the 1800 loop before you see this:

 

 

That's the new Four Seasons hotel being erected on land that Disney sold to a third party developer.  It's not an ugly building, but I sure wish it was built someplace else:

 

 

Do you see that gate there to the right?  That's the edge of the Fort.  And, there's something there that has me puzzled.

 

There are two beat-up bikes parked here:

 

 

What are these two bikes doing here?  They are the same exact kind of bike:

 

 

And they are in bad condition:

 

 

You can see in that second to the last photo above, that they're locked to the fence with a cable lock.

 

This has me stumped.

 

Another mystery to add to my list.

 

Oh well.

 

That's the way it goes.

 

As soon as I solve one, another one comes up.

 

But wait, you say- where's the solved mystery?

 

Hang on just a minute, we're almost there.

 

My plan this morning was to stay on this side of the gate.  I would snap a photo of the abomination, and head back to the Fort.  So, here's that photo:

 

 

When I took that photo, I noticed that there were a bunch of new trees planted over there around the building.  A bunch. Like hundreds.  I needed to take a closer look.  So, I headed that way.

 

I think it was around this same time last year that I spotted an old tank in the woods along the path here.  I thought it was a propane tank, but Specularius said it wasn't.  When I have visited since, I didn't notice it again.  But the vines and such have died down a bit since it's technically winter, and I spotted the tank again:

 

 

I climbed through the brush a bit for a closer look:

 

 

I'm not sure if you can read the label on the tank, but it says Carbon Dioxide.  And the green diamond says the contents of the tank are non-flammable. 

 

The tank is hooked up to this thing:

 

 

Do you know what that is?

 

It's some kind of a mosquito catcher.  Some scientist types must be using this trap to catch mosquitoes for research purposes.  The carbon dioxide is what attracts them to humans.  So, the machine is trying to simulate human breathing.  Clever.

 

Either that, or this is the work of those Iranian Nuclear Scientists that DIT has tried to warn me about.

 

Whatever it may be, I had to move on.

 

Here's a bird and a sidewalk:

 

 

This is the old first hole of the Osprey Ridge golf course.  It's currently closed, and they're working on the course:

Here's where things stand two years and one week after the December 6, 2011 groundbreaking:

 

 

All the trees you see planted there along the water are new.

 

I wanted a closer look, so I walked on.

This block building is new- I'm not sure what it's for.  Also, see those towers up on the top of the building?  There are now red blinking strobe lights mounted on poles on top of them.  Yes, you can see them from the Fort at night:

The new trees are planted right up to the water line of the canal- this is the same canal that passes by the Fort and drains in to Bay Lake:

 

 

Up to this point, I hadn't seen anyone out here on the golf course, but just now I saw a light blue colored golf cart driving toward me from deep in the old golf course.  I decided to head on out.

 

Heading back to the Fort:

 

 

I was almost to the gate when the golf cart caught up with me.  It was a couple of men.  One had on a windbreaker with a Four Seasons logo.  They asked what I was doing there.  And I told them I had wandered over from the campground to look at the building.   The golf cart driver, who seemed to be in charge, asked how I liked the new landscaping.  I said I liked it.  I asked when they were going to open.  He said summer.  I told him I had been watching the progress for the last two years.  That was it.  Just a civil conversation.  And, they never told me that I shouldn't have been there.  There they go:

My Christmas gift to you.

 

As a matter of fact, my intent was to try to finish this entire report before Christmas, but I'm not sure we will make it.

 

I'll try, though.

 

After the visit to the abomination, I needed to see some nice Fort stuff. 

 

I had already been out by the dam.

 

So, how about the back porch of the Meadow Trading Post?

 

Here we are.

 

While I was back here, the sun tried to come out.

 

It made for some interesting lighting on Bob's dock:

 

 

The water in the old Fishin' hole was very calm and smooth, which made for some nice photos of Bear Rock:

 

 

 

Every time I see Bear Rock, I think of good old Fishin' Frank.  I'll bet he sneaks a peek over here every now and then, so in case you're reading Frank- Merry Christmas!

 

That pond scum that was here just yesterday was already gone this morning.  I guess that rain helped flush things out a bit:

I would have liked to sit on one of these rockers and listen to some of the Christmas songs playing on the Fort soundtrack, but I had things to do:

 

 

I saw this lady on a Segway around the Fort a few times over the weekend.  I guess she has her own Segway- that would be fun:

 

 

I think it was at this point that I realized that I had not yet taken any photos of site 617, so I headed over there to remedy that oversight:

While I was in the neighborhood, I figured I may as well get some photos of and from the footbridge.  It's right down this path:

There are two of these signs in the Fort.  And I love them both.  They are looking kind of beat.  The idiot managers had better not remove these:

 

 

Speaking of management, there was word that there was some kind of water main break on the 2000 loop the night before.  The new Fort manager allegedly showed up there in with his bandana and pony.  I needed to go and check on that.

 

On the way, I looked down the main entrance road.  The leaves on the trees in the island in the middle of the road are finally starting to shed their leaves for the winter, even though we haven't had much cold weather to speak of:

 

 

Here on the 2000 loop, I saw evidence of some big work that must have been done the night before:

 

 

There were still a lot of campers on the loop, though.

 

I love these tents that you can hook up to the back of your SUV.  That's a clever idea:

 

 

On both of the previous evenings, we visited the big Christmas display on the 1600 loop.  This year's display is better than ever, with a path that goes all the way around the site:

 

 

It was around this time that I remembered that I needed to bring that cable converter back to the Meadow Trading Post.  So, I went back to the camper, got it, and headed back toward the Trading Post via the Meadow Recreation Area.  Even though you can't drive over the bridge, I still go that way sometimes and park by the Bike Barn and walk- it's easier than driving all the way around.

 

Here by the tennis courts, I took a photo looking back toward the 1500 loop:

 

 

There were some guys pouring a replacement sidewalk section here yesterday.  I resisted the urge to write my name:

 

 

I brought the cable box back, and spoke to Wilma.  She's been at the Fort for over 25 years.  You would recognize her if you saw her.  She told me that she will be retiring at the end of the year.  That's sad.

 

Something else sad is that the corner of the Trading Post where they sold camping cook books and other stuff you need has been taken over by MagicBand accessories.

If you have more money than brains, you can also buy yourself some MagicSliders:

 

 

I guess these things are the replacement for Photopass that Devores has told us about:

 

 

 

Those must be embarrassingly expensive.  Even Disney was ashamed to post the price.  And, they're not easy to shame.

There is a good chance that there will be bonus features.  But, perhaps a better chance of an entirely separate TR. I'm working on the details.

Well, it looks like this report is not going to be quite finished by Christmas, but at least we will almost be out of the Fort by the time this update ends.

 

We left off admiring the wares for sale in the Meadow Trading Post.

 

I didn't have room to post a photo of one other Magic Band accessory you can buy.  CoverBands:

 

 

You know, somebody in the marketing department got paid good money to come up with the names for this stuff.

 

So, we have Bandits, Sliders and CoverBands.  A whole wall full.  Who is going to buy this stuff?  Well, just as I asked myself this question, a kid comes up on cue and starts begging his parents for some of the Bandits.  That's why Disney is rich and I'm not.  What do I know?

 

And, you know what?  Everything is relative.  A CoverBand is cheaper than a can of Easy Cheese:

 

 

And that's not the only overpriced easy cheese product available for purchase.  If you are so inclined, you can also purchase some cheesy made easy:

 

 

How much?

 

If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

 

Just kidding-those are only $1.95 a piece:

 

 

Uh-oh, SpaghettiO's go for $1.45:

 

 

Do you see that can of Chicken Noodle soup?  It's $1.95:

 

 

The Soup on the Go will cost you a buck more.

 

Did you notice that all of those price tags say "starlightcreations.com" on them?  Do you know why?

 

As near as I can tell, Starlight Creations is a subcontractor who provides a bunch of things Disney sells in the Trading Posts here at the Fort, and also in gift shops at the DVC resorts.  This company apparently is responsible for stocking and pricing the items, and they must pay Disney a cut of the action.  Not all of the food items in the Trading Post have these price tags.  Some have regular Disney price tags.  The stuff in the refrigerated case like eggs and milk apparently is not stocked by Starlight Creations.  I wonder how this started, and how long it's been going on?

 

Enough of that.

 

How about a look at the nice decorations on the Meadow Trading Post fireplace?:

 

 

Disney fans often compliment Disney on its attention to details.  So, let's look at some of the details:

 

 

 

That's pretty awesome.

 

Sorry that these next two photos are blurry, but they're the best I have.  The display of Fort Wilderness specific merchandise appears to be fully stocked:

 

 

 

Remember how I mentioned that the new Magic Band accessories display took the place of the old book display area in the Meadow Trading Post?  Well, they put a small display of camping themed books over here next to the t-shirts:

 

 

I could have stayed longer, but I needed to get back to camp and pack-up.  So, I headed out.

 

Here's a photo of the big sycamore tree out back of the Trading Post:

The azalea plants out back are ready to skip winter altogether.  Some flowers are already showing up:

 

 

The pool wasn't getting a lot of action as I passed by. But then, it was only a little after 9.  Give it time:

 

 

Over the past two evenings, I had seen a lot of fire pits in use around the Fort, including a propane one and several that had no covers at all.  Nobody seems to be checking on these, and I wondered if they had stopped handing out the approved fire pit list.  So, I finally took a look a the packet I had received at check in.  Here's everything spread out:

 

 

The fire pit sheet is there.  But, I guess the management doesn't think fire safety is a priority.

 

Speaking of management, it was announced a couple of weeks ago that the Fort has a new manager, and that the old one, Doug Lord had moved on to another area of responsibility in WDW.  Well, I guess they had a lot of these new packets already printed, so we will have to wait on the new manager's personal greeting:

 

 

I guess that famed Disney attention to detail only goes so far.

 

Since things were still wet, that meant I was going to have to pop the camper up when I got home so it could dry out before I put it away.  So, that meant I could pack quicker than normal.  And I did.

 

We headed out just a little past 11.  And we hit the dreaded late Sunday morning Fort traffic jam.  Traffic was backed up all the way to the four way stop:

 

 

On holiday weekends, it's worse.

 

When we made it up to the driveway for the maintenance area, there was a CM there directing some of the traffic through the backstage area:

 

 

He pointed us that way, and I handed Twin #1 the camera:

 

 

Who knows what secrets and treasures we might see?  So far, not much:

Speaking of which- I forgot to mention that you can also see the abomination from a very prominent attraction in one of the parks.  I may have a photo of that to share later.  Stay tuned.

 

OK, now here's some stuff.  What's that on the ground by the sheds?  Roof vents or something?  And, do you see that there's a site marker leaning against that pine tree?  It's for site 1310.  Did someone run over the old one?:

When we passed by the old Fort entrance sign, Twin #1 passed me the camera, and I did my best to drive and shoot:

Right after the last photo, I saw something sad.

 

A bunch of the nice old style log benches were lined up here.

When I took you back there about a year ago, some benches were lined up then, did you take a photo of those?

I thought, or assumed, that the benches we saw back then were being refurbished.

I can almost guarantee that if they're not being repurposed, they will not be thrown out.

I thought that was a secret mission. I only took a couple of photos. I think back then the old style log benches were being refurbished as needed. But these benches have been replaced. At the campfire, there are all new benches. The difference is that the new ones have a board for the seat instead of the split log. Maybe not a big deal, but the old style bench was something unique to the Fort. As time marches on, more and more things that made the Fort unique have disappeared. These log benches are the latest thing to go.
