Someone on FB posted two notices from their kids schools.

The one from FL said that the schools would be closed today due to extreme weather conditions.

The other was an email from their kids previous school district in WI.  "The district will cancel school when they have a sustained wind chill factor of minus 35 or lower.  Please make sure your kids are dressed appropriately for the weather."

When we moved to Colorado my kids had been use to the "It might snow so no school today" way of operating. Each year the superintendent of the Colorado school system put out a memo detailing his inclement weather policy. It was very simple. If he could make to the office the schools would open. He also noted that in all of his years in that school system he had never been forced to stay home. The girls were so depressed.

I think they do that, for the kids at the bus stops.  In places where super cold temps are not the norm, kids are not properly dressed.

Yet those same kids will be outside playing. I can somewhat understand the delay but there is no reason to cancel school just because it won't be above freezing.

  2. We have never rented a golf cart. We stay in a loop about half way from each end of the campground and either walk or take the internal buses to get around. If you are in the Meadows area it is about a mile walk to either the Settlement or Outpost. The only time we've used our vehicle inside the park was to get the propane tank filled at the Meadows. It has a small number of parking sites. You could also drive to the Outpost and park in the overflow lot if you didn't want to wait for a bus.

we ended up just hanging out at Territory Lounge.  And let me tell you....that was a good call.  It was FAN-freakin-TASTIC!   Cozy, relaxing, and all around enjoyable.

I'm sure it was a Fiend who tipped me off to the Territory Lounge. I like that place a lot too. In fact my Mom and I have been known to go there twice in the same trip. Quiet, cozy, no ADR required, good food. Can't go wrong, really!

Rene and I always make a stop by the Territory Lounge. It is one our favorite places to relax with a drink and a midevening meal of appetizers.

I saw that - crazypants!! Yesterday morning they reported -20 with 60mph winds, putting the windchill around -60.

It's currently -12  - and that's not the wind chill, it's the actual temp. We haven't seen highs out of the teens in a week, although we may get into the mid-20s Weds-Thurs - just warm enough for snow!  LOL

Saturday's projected HIGH is 5.  Yep, that's the high.

    Wow!!

    Ugh!

Woke up to 12 degrees here in Atlanta... yuck!!

I'm looking out on 18 degrees and a high of 32 today. I guess that's a veritable heatwave for some folks but round here it just plain too cold.

Still trying to get used to it being a new year. I was talking with my mom yesterday saying this amount of cold, its length and earliness is not normal although we do get a cold spell in January. Then it hit me what day it was so I clarified that was late January. She was still laughing over the fact an old lady knew what day it was better than her younger son when we hung up.

  5. There is only one way to handle tree rats but unfortunately it isn't allowed at the Fort. We use to have to keep our water containers in the car or bear box when we would camp at Lassen NP or else the tree rats would nibble holes in them to use as a drinking fountain.

Our old house in Colorado was about a 1/4 mile from some people who kept peacocks and they are some of the noisiest animals I've ever heard. Even as far away as we were they were loud enough to be annoying sitting on the patio.

  6. This part of a legal opinion on the Florida bicycle helmet law from the Florida Attorney General's Office. So it looks like the helmet law does not apply to scooters.

"Every vehicle propelled solely by human power, and every motorized bicycle propelled by a combination of human power and an electric helper motor capable of propelling the vehicle at a speed of not more than 20 miles per hour on level ground upon which any person may ride, having two tandem wheels, and including any device generally recognized as a bicycle though equipped with two front or two rear wheels. The term does not include such a vehicle with a seat height of no more than 25 inches from the ground when the seat is adjusted to its highest position or a scooter or similar device. No person under the age of 16 may operate or ride upon a motorized bicycle."[1]

I have a question, since I have lived in Florida for almost 74 years, maybe some fiend can answer it for me. Why does anyone want to live in a place with that kind of cold weather? My father always claimed they were just yankees and just didn't know better, but there must be a better reason, somebody clue me in on what it is.

The same reason some of us live with very hot and humid summers. It is kind of a pick your poison kind of thing.
